There are several types of unbalanced trim designs for control valves including standard full area trim, reduced trim, and integral seat trim, each providing different flow coefficients (Cv). Pressure-balanced trim can be used for high pressure drop applications or large seat diameters to reduce the actuator thrust requirement by decreasing the effective offbalance area, though an over-sized cylinder actuator may be more economical. Pressure-balanced trim should be used in clean services as the closely-fitting plug and sleeve could be impacted by debris otherwise.

Unbalanced and Pressure-balanced Trim
Unbalanced Trim Types There are various unbalanced trim designs: 1) standard full area trim which provides maximum Cv with a removable seat ring; 2) reduced trim which provides a lower Cv in a wide variety of sizes or when larger bodies are required; 3) integral seat trim which utilizes the seat machined into the body and an oversized plug to provide additional Cv beyond the capabilities of standard full area trim. Pressure-balanced Trim Some high pressure drop applications or valves with large seat diameters may require pressure-balanced trim. Pressure-balanced trim reduces the actuator thrust requirement by reducing the trims effective offbalance area. However, with high-thrust cylinder actuators, pressure-balanced trim may not be required. Often, an over-sized cylinder actuator may be the most economical choice. Because the pressure-balanced plug fits closely to the sleeve (or retainer), the trim should be used in relatively clean services.
