PART-B (2X16=32)(1X8=8) :: 40 MARKS

6. a) (i) For the magnetic circuit shown in Fig. determine the current required to establish a flux density
of
0.5 T in the air gap.

(10)

(ii) Draw the B-H curve and obtain an expression for hysteresis loss.

(6)

b) (i) An electromagnetic relay has an exciting coil of 800 turns. The coil has a cross sectional area
of 5 cm x 5 cm. Find
(1) Coil inductance if the air-gap length is 0.5 cm.
(2) Field energy stored for a coil current of 1.25 A.
(3) Permeance at air gap
(8)
(ii) The core loss of a specimen of silicon steel is found to be 1500W at 50Hz. Keeping the flux
density constant, the loss becomes 3000W when the frequency is raised to 75Hz. Calculate separately
the hysteresis and eddy current losses at each of those frequencies.
(8)

7. a) (i) Prove that the coefficient of mutual inductance M between two coils of Self inductance L 1 and L2
is given by M k L1 L2 , where k is the coefficient of coupling.

(8)

(ii) Explain the operation of a magnetic circuit when A.C. current is applied to the coil wound on iron
core.

b) (i) Develop an expression for the induced emf of a transformer and hence show that the
number of turns on HV and LV windings are in the ratio of their voltages.
(8)
(ii) Explain the constructional details of core and shell type transformers.
(8)
8. a) Obtain the approximate equivalent circuit of a single phase transformer.

(8)

b) The parameters of approximate equivalent circuit of a 4 KVA, 200/400V, 50 Hz, 1
transformer are: RP=0.15, XP=0.37, R0=600, Xm=300. When rated voltage of 200V is
applied to the primary, a current of 10A at lagging power factor of 0.8 flows in the secondary
winding, calculate :
(1) The current in the primary IP
(2) The terminal voltage at the secondary side
