Objective:
Studentswillbeabletosolveadditionandsubtractionproblemsinformofan
equation,wordproblem,reallifesituation,bypracticingtheiradditionandsubtractionskillswith
fourdifferentactivities.
Procedure:
Thestudentswillpracticefouractivitiesbyrotatingingroupstofourcenters.Inthefirstcenter,
thestudentswillpracticetheiraddingskillsbygroceryshopping.Thestudentswillbeableto
learnhowtoestimate(roundup)tothenearestdollar.Eachstudentisgoingtohave$15tospend
ongroceries.Studentshavetoaddandsubtractsotheywontgooverthelimit.Studentsareable
tolearnhowtospendtherightamountofmoneytobuyspecificgroceries.Materialsneededare
dryeraseboards&supermarketads.ThesecondactivityiscountingmoneyThestudentswillbe
abletolearnhowtocountspecificchange.Theyaregoingtohaveanindexcardswithdifferent
amountofchange.Itistheremissiontocountthemoneysotheycangettherightanswer.This
activitytheyareusingaddition.Materialsneededareindexcardswithdifferentmoneychange&
fakemoney(dollars,nickels,quarters,anddimes).Forthethirdactivitythestudentswillhave
wordproblemcardswhichtheywillreadaloudanddecidewhetherthewordproblemisasking
toaddorsubtract.Thestudentswilluseadryeraseboardtohelpthemwithdrawingandwriting
anequationinordertosolvetheproblem.Materialsneededarewordproblemcardsand
dryeraseboards.Thefourthandlastactivityisabingogamewithadditionandsubtraction
equations.Thestudentswillbegivenafewminutestosolveeachequationandwritetheanswer.
Theteacherwillthencalloutanumberandstudentsmustplaceasmallplasticbearontopofthe
number(correctanswerofeachequation),thefirststudenttomakeahorizontalline,oravertical
line,oradiagonallinewiththebears,wins!Teacherwillthenverifytheanswers.Thismayalso
serveasanassessment.Materialsneededarebingocardswithadditionandsubtraction
equations,weterasemarkers,andbearstoplaceontopofnumbers.Teachershouldalsowriteon
