Circuits Analysis 1 Homework #2 Problem 1: Find The Current Iy in The Circuit Below

1) The current iy in the circuit is 4A. Using KCL, the current i1 is found to be 6A. Then using current division, iy is calculated to be 4A. 2) In the second circuit, the current i is found to be 2A using KCL. Va is then calculated to be 10V. Vc is then found to be -15V. 3) The equivalent resistance Req of the third circuit is found to be 2R using parallel and series combinations of the resistances.

Circuits Analysis 1

Homework #2
Problem 1: Find the current iy in the circuit below:

3A
10W
7A

2W

2Ry
Rx

C
i2

i1
10W

4W

4A

Ry

iy

Rx

2A

Using KCL
i2+4 = 2 => i2 = -2A.
By Applying KCL @ Center C =>
7=3+i1+i2 => i1= 4 (i2) = 4- (-2) = 6 A
Now using current division in the right branch:
iy= i1 * 2Ry/(2Ry+Ry) = i1 * 2/3 = 4A

Problem 2 In the circuit below find the voltage Vc:

10W

30V

0.5Va

+
Va
-

5W

3W

+
Vc
-

Current in the left loop (i)

i = 30 (10 + 5) = 2A (clockwise)
Va= 5 * 2 = 10 v
The value of the dependent current source will be 0.5 * Va = .5 * 10 = 5 A.
Vc= - 5 * 3 = -15 v.
Problem 3: find the equivalent resistance of the following circuit:

2R

Req = R + 2R // (R + R)
= R + 2R // 2R
=R + R = 2R

Problem 4: Find (a) the current iR, (b) The Voltage Vx, in the circuit below:

4W

3A

Vx
+

4W

iR

2W

3A

4W

2A

ix

(a)

This is a single node circuit.

Need to apply KCL at the node.
3+3= 2+iR+ix
Next we find values of current in terms of the node voltage (call it V).
iR= V/2
ix = V/8
4= (V/2) + (V/8)
Solving for V = 32/5 = 6.4 v.
iR= V/2= 3.2 A.

(b)
Vx= -ix * 4 = - (6.4/8) * 4 = -3.2 v

Problem 5: Find the currents i1 through i4:

4W

i1
i2

2A

3A

2W
6W

2W
i3

i4

Using KCL @ Left Node

2= i1+i2+3 => i1 + i2 = -1 (This is the total current going into both of upper
branches)
This will also be the same current going through the 2 branches to the right.
Meaning, i3 + i4 = -1 as well.
Using current division at the top we know that:
i1 = (-1)*2/ (2+4) = -1/3 A.
i2= (-1) * 4 / (2+4) = -2/3 A.
Using current division at the right side we know that:
i3= (-1) * 2 / (2+6) = -1/4 A.
i4 = (-1)*6/ (2+6) = -3/4 A.
