Questions and Answers

1) The construction industry has seen little change in its approach and principles due to its highly unstructured work environment, whereas industries like manufacturing and software have benefited more from automation research. 2) The automobile industry has grown more than construction due to a focus on productivity through techniques like computer-aided manufacturing (CIM) which balance flexibility and efficiency to reduce product and development costs. 3) Robotics and automation is gradually becoming more important in construction, evolving from the cradle stage in 1984-1985 to a growing and developing role according to trends in automated construction.

Questions and

Answers
1) Why has there been little change in the approach and
principles used in the construction industry?
Most of the focus of the research and development of the
automation industry has been on software and
manufacturing sectors. The main difficulty of Robotics and
automation in construction (RAC) is related to the nature
of work environment, which is highly unstructured in
general.
2) How has the automobile industry grown as compared to
the construction industry?
One of the key factors of the success of the automobile
industry has been its productivity. Computer Aided
Manufacturing (CIM) allows to balance the flexibility in the
product with the manufacturing productivity. The
automobile industry has been continuously seeking to
reduce the cost of product development, subsequently
reducing the cost of final product as well.

3) Is there an increase in the role of robotics and automation
in the construction industry?
Automation is gradually gaining importance in the
construction industry. This is evident from the following
ISARC trends:

a) Cradle (1984-85)
b) Growing(1986-89)
c) Developing(1990-98)

4) Are there some automation technologies being used in the
construction industry?
Robotics and automation is being used in making civil
infrastructure and house building. New technologies that
are being used include software integration, virtual reality
systems and sensory data acquisition and processing.
5) How can automation be used to increase the safety of
operators and machines?
Reliable systems to detect possible failures and to avoid
any ham to workers, machines and installations can be
developed. Computational safety helmets with portable
GPS and micro-camera can be popularised.
