Pythagoras was a Greek mathematician born in 570 BC in Samos, Greece who made many important discoveries in mathematics and founded the Pythagorean school of mathematics. He is most famous for discovering the Pythagorean theorem, which states that in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. While Pythagoras was not the first to discover this theorem, he is credited with its first recorded proof. PYTHAGORAS

A mathematical presentation by Jacob,


Catherine and Lilly.

Who is Pythagoras?
Pythagoras was born in 570 BC in Samos Greece. Pythagoras Died in
495 BC at age 75 in Metapontum. His Father was Mnesarchus, and his
Mother was Pythais. Pythagoras married Theano and had 4 children
called Damo, Myia, Arignote and Telauges. His mentors were Thales,
Pherekdyes and Anixamander. Pythagoras also made discoveries in
music, astronomy and medicine. Pythagoras was interested in
Philosophy but was more interested in Music and Maths. Pythagoras is
also known as the first pure mathematician. Unlike many other
mathematicians today we have no books of Pythagorass texts.
Pythagoras also found the Pythagorean Theorem and he founded the
Pythagorean School of Mathematics in Cortona.

History/Understanding of the Pythagorean


Theorem
Pythagoras is said to be founder of the Theorem but Pythagoras wasnt the
first one to discover the theorem. It all started with the Egyptians in 2650
BC. The Egyptians knew a triangle that had 3, 4, or 5 sides made a 90
degree angle. The other people that discovered it are The Babylonians
1900 BC - 1600 BC, The Chinese 1100 BC, The Indians 800 BC - 200 BC
and finally Pythagoras. The Pythagorean Theorem helps us
to figure out
the length of a 90 degree triangle.
It is worked out by a squared + b squared =
c squared. That happens because a, b and c
are the lengths of the sides of the triangle.
Because on a right angle the
letters are a and
b but on the
triangle the opposite side is c.

HIS MATHEMATICAL WORK


Pythagoras invented geometry and shapes as well as working out how
to use them we use them today in our maths and everyday life builders
need it for measuring. Also teachers need it for their jobs. So you see
everybody uses geometry.

WHY WE NEED PYTHAGORASS WORK


We need his work because without geometry ,builders wouldnt be able
to make houses and we would have no entertainment, no games, no TV
and how would doors open? How would we travel around the earth?
That is why we need geometry

This is the Pythagorean Theorem.
Builders use it for measuring the frames,and the
length and width,and truckers use it for measuring
their load.
