Standard 1 5 and 1 2

The lesson introduces students to programming a NXT robot to use its ultrasonic sensor to detect and navigate around objects. It begins with a teacher demonstration of a robot moving and reacting to obstacles. Students will then learn how to program the ultrasonic sensor through hands-on practice, such as making the robot stop when a certain distance from an object. To conclude, students will program their robot to navigate a maze using the ultrasonic sensor and a loop structure, with teacher assistance provided as needed.

Lesson 1 Introduction to the NXT Ultrasonic Sensor

TOPIC: Introduction to the NXT Ultrasonic sensor

CHAPTER: Chapter 10 - Help, Im Stuck!

LESSON: 10
TIME ALLOCATED: 70 Minutes

SUBJECT AREA GUIDELINES: Technologies F-10

YEAR LEVEL: 8
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

SYS (Systems) - 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2 6.2

Learning Objectives (Australian Curriculum):

Implement and modify programs with user interfaces involving branching, iteration and functions in a general-purpose programming language
(ACTDIP030)

Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to build and program a NXT robot to detect and move around objects.

Required Materials:
1 Computer Lab
Projector used for demonstrations
NXT Software used to program the NXT Robots
1 NXT Robot Kit per group (10 Kits) limited resources, students to share a robot between two
1 Computer per group (10 Groups) students will only require 1 computer per pair
5 Basic NXT Mazes extra resource created by teacher as an extra challenge to assess students and promote critical thinking and
problem solving.

Lesson Structure:
Introduction
Time
5 Minutes

In my lesson I provide plenty of opportunity demonstrate additional

teaching strategies to cater for the needs of students from diverse
linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. This
includes further demonstration, repeating instructions and/or
shortening instructions of the activity when walking around.
(Standard 1.5)

Content
Demonstrate a robot moving around the room, reacting stopping and
manoeuvring around obstacles

Teacher demonstration followed by students

attempting is also an effective teaching strategy
when working with Robotics. It allows teachers to
check for understanding immediately and correct
any misunderstandings. This is demonstrated
throughout the lesson. (Standard 1.2)

Teaching Approaches
Focus learners attention to the task and
motivate them to try and replicate the same.

Core Lesson
Time
5 Minutes

Content
Introduce the ultrasonic sensor - Demonstrate how to
use and configure the ultrasonic sensor.

Teacher to do
Demonstrate step by step the
programming of a robot moving
forward until it comes within a
certain distance of an object, then
stopping.

Students to do
Observe demonstration

15 Minutes

Hands on learning The Ultrasonic sensor.

Walk around classroom providing

assistance to students, in
particular check with ESL and
LD students that they are able to
understand, redemonstrate if
needed.
Demonstrate to students how to
program the robot to change
direction when it comes within a
certain distance of an object.

Use the NXT programing

software to recreate the program
demonstrated. Ask for assistance
if needed.

Walk around classroom providing

assistance to students, in
particular check with ESL and LD
students that they are able to
understand, redemonstrate if
needed.

Use the NXT programming

software to recreate the program.
Experiment with different
combinations of movements.

Allow time for students to try creating the program,

experimenting with different ultrasonic sensor values.

5 Minutes

Interacting with Objects provide programming

demonstration

15 Minutes

Hands on learning Interacting with Objects Allow

time for students to replicate the program. Trying
different combinations of movements once
confronted with an object.

Observe demonstration

In my lesson I provide plenty of opportunity demonstrate additional teaching strategies to cater for the needs of students from diverse linguistic,
cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. This includes further demonstration of the activity when walking around. (Standard 1.5)

30 Minutes

Challenge / Assessment Navigate the Maze

Demonstrate using a loop block

how the ultrasonic sensor can be
used by the robot to navigate a
maze. Set the challenge for
students to try developing a
program to navigate one of the
basic mazes provide before the
end of the lesson. Walk around
classroom providing assistance to
students, in particular check with
ESL and LD students that they
are able to understand,
redemonstrate if needed.

Use the NXT programming

software to create a program that
navigates a robot around the
mazes provided before the end of
the lesson.
