Title Inductive Reactance and Series Impedence of Series RC Circuit Submitted by Nasir Aziz Muhammad Tayyab Kamran Chugtai Noman Tanveer

This lab report summarizes an experiment on the inductive reactance and series impedance of a series RC circuit. The experiment measured the capacitive reactance (Xc) of a capacitor at different frequencies by applying an AC voltage to a circuit containing a resistor and capacitor in series. The results showed that as frequency increased, the measured capacitive reactance decreased, confirming the theoretical relationship defined by Xc = 1/(2πfC).

Theory :
Capacitance is defined as the opposition offered to the alternating current by the
circuit elements. In case of a capacitor it is called Capacitive Reactance i.e. Xc
which arises due to electric field and electro-static force which prevents current
to flow in the circuit. Like resistance it is also measured in terms of Ohms.
Its mathematical formula is given as:
Xc = C/2f
Where,
F is frequency in Hz
And
C is the capacitance in farads.
As the formula suggests Xc decreases with the increase in the capacitance.

Equipment and materials.

Function Generator.
Resistance 1.5 kilo ohms.
Capacitor.
Digital Multimeter.
Oscilloscope.

Procedure:
Connect the circuit as shown in figure.
Set the function generator to the frequency of 5KHz.
Then, we took the values of Vc and Vr and calculated their vector sums
equal to the voltage of the input source.
First I only took the resistance circuit and calculated the current for it using
DMM.

Then we set the frequency of sinusoidal A.C. at 5 kHz and measured the Vc
and Vr across the capacitor and resistor.
Similarly, we went on increasing the values of frequency by 5khz each time
and calculated capacitive reactance for each value of frequency.
For each step compute the value of capacitive reactance Xc using following
formula .

Using the experimental data we proved that capacitive reactance Xc

decreases with the increase in the frequency.
