Infographic Workshop Plan

Goal:
Upon the completion of this unit, the students in EDIT 5564 course will create an
infographic to introduce the technology tools in their workshops by using the
PiktoChart web tools.

Objectives:
1. Identify and describe infographics (criteria: images and information)
2. Utilize the steps of infographic design process.
3. Design their own technology tool workshop s infographic using PiktoChart web
tools.

Gain Attention/ Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning: (3 min)


Present the AECT standards in infographic format and in text format.

Inform Learner of Objectives:(1 min)


Present three objectives to the students.

Present New Content/Provide Learning Guidance/Elicit


Performance/Provide Feedback on Performance
Chunk 1: Objective 1- Identify and describe infographics (8 min)
1. Stimulate Recall:
Say: Just as what we have already seen, infographics is a creative way to
present information.
2. Gain attention: Ask a question: How do you define infographics?
3. Provide Learning Guidance:
While students are answering the question, the instructor leads them to summarize the
two key features of infographics.
4. Present New Content:
Present our definition of infographics, explain why people use infographics and the
appropriate situations for us to use infographics.
Instructional Materials:
Definition of Infographics: Information graphics or Infographics are graphic visual
representations of information; data or knowledge intended to present information
quickly and clearly. They can improve cognition by utilizing graphics to enhance the
human visual system's ability to see patterns and trends.
Key features: image & text information

The purpose for using infographics: to improve cognition by utilizing graphics to


enhance the visual systems ability to see patterns and trends.
Why to use the infographics:
1. Visual processing occupies half of the operation system in human brain.
2. People can catch visual information in less than 1/10 of a second.
3. Color visuals make people willing to read 80% of content.
4. Text with illustration directs people do 323% better than the text directions.
5. People can remember 80% of what they see and do, not what they read.
6. Compared to what is read, up to 80% of what people see and do can be
remembered
The appropriate situation for using infographics:
1. Present large amounts of information.
2. Communicate messages
3. Highlight important information.
4. Discover and illustrate the logical relations.
5. Elicit Performance:
Instructors demonstrate three images to students. Students will be asked to identify
which one is infographic and explain the reason using the definition and key features of
infographics.
6. Provide Feedback on Performance:
Instructors give immediate feedback to students if they choose the wrong image or
misunderstand the definition and features of infographics. Or instructors ask students
why they think the images are not the infographics.
Chunk 2: Objective 2&3:
Objective 2: Utilize the steps of infographic design process. (12 min)
Objective 3: Design their technology tools infographic using PiktoChart web
tools. (75 min)
1. Gain Attention / Stimulate Recall:
Say: After we know about what is infographics, why we use them and when we will
use them, Wejdan will introduce the infographic design process to you. Ill write down
the keywords in each step on the whiteboard.
Do you remember the infographic design process we learnt before? Now its your time
to utilize this process (flow, color, data, sources, and words). These two sentences will
be written down on the Piktochart handout.
2. Present New Content:
Present the infographic design process, and show students the short video about how
to use PiktoChart.

3. Provide Learning Guidance:
Write down the keywords in each step on the whiteboard.
Deliver the handouts to students as guidance when they are creating their infographic
by using PiktoChart.
4. Elicit Performance:
Students find their workshop partners, and work together to create an infographic for
their workshop in TechTool class.
5. Provide Feedback on Performance:
Walk through to provide immediate feedback to each group.

Assess Performance: (Option, 15 min. If all the groups creations have certain
parts that can be shown after 60 min the design activity began, the instructors
will ask students to do this activity.)
Students are asked to share their infographics on their workshop page in their website.

Enhance Retention and Transfer: (14 min)


(12 min) Ask student question: When will you use infographic? And why do you
choose infographic?
As an open question, students are asked to share their thoughts about two questions
and type the thoughts into the Using Infographic google doc to share them.
(2 min) Homework: Continue to develop the infographic for your workshop, and
posted on your workshop website.
