Welcome to 6
Grade!
This is going to be a very exciting school year
for both parents and students. We are looking
forward to working with you throughout the
school year to make this an awesome
experience. Students will be switching
teachers for their math, science, and social
studies classes. Each month the 6th grade
team will be sending home a monthly
newsletter to keep parents and students
informed on events and news about the 6th
grade. Focus areas this month for students,
teachers, and parents will be to get
acquainted and familiar with expectations and
classroom procedures as well as prepare for
the MEAP test that will occur in October.
Many exciting programs, fieldtrips and
activities are being introduced this month in
all subject areas as well as extracurricular
activities. Make sure you check our 6th grade
team website any time for all other news and
updates.
English Language Arts
MEAP
preparation for 6 grade Reading will
Science
take place in ELA all month. Students will be
th
working on both writing and reading skills as
well as strategies to use for test taking during
the next couple of weeks. Students will be
journal writing daily as well as independently
reading both at home and school. Make sure
to sign and return the Reading Log contract to
teachers. Every month students will be
responsible for a book project.
Science
In science this month we will be focusing on
science skills, measurement, scientific
method, and Science MEAP practice in the
three sciences areas (physical, life, and earth
science). If any student is interested in
joining the Science Club, make sure all
permission slips are returned to Mrs. Jackson
by the 19th. Please make sure you have a
spiral notebook for science each day to take
your science notes in. It is going to be a great
year in science!
Math
In math this month we will be focusing on
a short review of basic skills, problem
solving strategies, as well as, MEAP
preparation for the test in October. Please
review the sixth grade math procedures and
homework policy that was sent home on
September 6th. I would also like to remind
you that I will be providing math tutoring on
Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:00 starting on
September 27th. Attendance for tutoring is
optional and students may attend on an as
needed basis. In am looking forward to an
exciting year!
Social Studies
This month in Social Studies we will review
concepts taught in previous years in
preparation for the MEAP test which will be
given on Wednesday, October 19, 2011. The
focus is on United States history, geography,
civics, and economics. We will also discuss
the events of 9/11 and how it relates to
Patriot Week and Constitution Day. Due to
the rescheduled open house date, our Social
Studies Club will not meet until October. As
we prepare for the MEAP please be on alert
for homework (9 MEAP assignments total)
that will be given to coincide with MEAP
review class lessons.

o One box of a dozen #2 pencils with erasers attached
o One package of colored pencils or crayons (No markers)
o Pens (one pack each of red, blue, and black)
o Two highlighters
o Two glue sticks
o Five spiral notebooks (70 page/single subject)
o Four pocket folders
o Pencil case/container
o Ruler with inches and centimeters
o Two boxes of family sized tissues
o One large container of hand sanitizer
o Flash drive (2 GB)
