Assignment No3

This document contains 8 mechanics problems involving forces, moments, and structural elements like cables, pipes, and cubes. The problems involve calculating magnitudes and directions of forces and moments, tensions in cables, projected force components, and distances related to force resultants. Diagrams provide visual context for the various structures and forces described in each multi-part mechanics problem.

ASSIGNMENT NO. 2
Date of Submission

1. Determine the magnitude and

coordinate
direction angles of the resultant force acting at
A . Refer Fig.1

Fig 1
2. A system of forces and moments acting in a
space are listed below:F1= 3i+ 5j- 6k acting at
a point (2, 1,-3), F2 = 5i- 4j+ 3k acting at a
point (1, 4,2) & Moment = 20i- 35j+ 60k.
Considering forces in kN, distances in meters
and moments in kN-m, (a) find out the
component of resultant force and its
magnitude (b) Resultant moment of the
system about the origin O

3. Find the magnitude of the projected

component of the force along the pipe AO.
Refer Fig.3
4. If cable AB is subjected to a tension of 700 N,
determine the tension in cables AC and AD
and the magnitude of the vertical force F .
Refer Fig.4

5.

Two cables are used to secure the

overhang boom in position and support the
1500-N load. If the resultant force is directed
along the boom from point A towards O,
determine the magnitudes of the resultant
force and forces FB and FC.
Set x = 3 m and z = 2 m. Refer Fig 5

6. The pipe assembly is subjected to the 80-N

force. Determine the moment of this force
about point B. Refer Fig 6

7. Determine the distance d between Aand B so that

the resultant couple moment has a magnitude of
MR = 20 N m. Refer Fig 7

8. A cube side of 1.2 m is acted upon by a force

P=100N as shown in Fig.8. Determine the
moment of P i) About A ii) About the edge
AB iii) About the diagonal AG of the cube
iv) Using resultant of part 3, determine the
perpendicular distance between AG and FG.
