Analyzing Box-And-Whisker Plots

This document provides instructions and questions for analyzing three box-and-whisker plots that display data on math test scores, time spent on homework, and time spent watching TV for a sophomore class. The first plot shows the distribution of math test scores. The second plot compares the amount of time spent on homework each night. The third set of plots compares the time spent on homework with time spent watching TV. There are a total of 26 multiple choice and short answer questions about interpreting the features and comparing the distributions shown in the three box-and-whisker plots.

Name:______________________________

Date:___________

Now that we know how to identify a data sets five number summary and draw box-and-whisker
plots, we need to be able to analyze finished box-and-whisker plots.
For questions 1 6, refer to the box-and-whisker plot below that demonstrates the test
results of a math class.

1. What was the high score on the test?

2. What percent of the class scored above a 72?
3. What was the median score on the test?
4. What percent of the class scored between 88 & 96?
5. Do you think that this test was too hard for the students? Explain.
6. Would you expect the class average to be above or below the median? Explain.

For questions 7 11 refer to the box-and-whisker plot below that demonstrates how much
time was spent per night on homework for sophomore class at a certain high school during
September.

7. What percent of the sophomores spend more than 60 minutes on homework per night?
8. What is the range of times that the middle 50% of the sophomores spend on homework

11. Would you expect the mean number of minutes per night to be higher or lower than the
median? Explain.

For questions 12 23, refer to the box-and-whisker plots below that compare homework
time per night with TV time per night for the same group of sophomores.

12. What percent of the sophomores watch TV for at least 15 minutes per night?
13. What is the 3rd quartile for the TV time data?

to the amount of students that watch TV for over 110 minutes?
15. Do more sophomores spend over an hour doing homework or watching TV? Explain how
you know.

homework or more than 1 hour watching TV? Explain.

For questions 15 23, identify if each statement is true, false, or cannot be determined.
17. Some sophomores didnt watch TV that month.
18. The TV box & whisker graph contains more data than the homework graph.
19. 25% of the sophomores spend between 48 & 60 minutes per night on homework.
20. 15% of the sophomores didnt watch TV that month.
21. In general, these sophomores spend more time watching TV than doing homework.
22. The TV data is more varied than the homework data.
23. The ratio of sophomores who spend more than 110 minutes per night watching TV to
those who spend less is about 2:1.
24. There are 225 sophomores that watch TV.
25. Twice as many sophomores watch TV for more than 1 hour than do homework for more
than 1 hour.
26. The following box-and-whisker plots demonstrate the average monthly temperatures of
Milwaukee and Honolulu. Write down three comparisons that you could say based off of
the differences between the two box-and-whisker plots.
