1. In your own words, write out the requirements for a sample to be considered each
one of the following types:
a. Convenience Sample:
b. Voluntary Sample:
c. Simple Random Sample:
d. Systematic Random Sample:
e. Stratified Random Sample:
f. Random Cluster Sample:
2. Identify what type of sample you think each of the following scenarios would fit and
why.
a. At the local barbeque restaurant, every 20th rib is eaten by the cook to maintain the
quality control of the food coming out of the kitchen.
b. During the faculty luncheon, all of the faculty members put their name in a jar. Names are
randomly selected at the end of the day to see who wins the door prizes.
c. The first 30 people that enter the local grocery store are asked what type of peanut butter
they like the most, chunky or creamy.
d. Students at a local university are split into groups based off of their indicated major. Two
people are randomly selected from each group to participate in a university panel to
decide punishment for violators of university rules.
e. The TCHS guidance department randomly selected BDB classes to get pizza party. If
your BDB was selected, the entire BDB got to eat pizza.
f. The local radio station was curious as to who plans on shopping at the new Hobby Lobby
once it opens. They asked listeners to call in and say if they are going to shop there or
not.
g. Apple wants to create the most quality computers on the market. Thus, they spot check
every 100th computer they manufacture by pulling it off the line and throwing it on the
ground.
h. Dr. Holland wanted to see if the faculty was ready for an emergency at all times. He went
to each department meeting and randomly chose people to answer safety questions.
i. The TCHS football puts on a 50/50 raffle at every football game. All the audience
members have a chance to buy a raffle ticket and before the end of the game, they select a
winner.
j. Mark Zuckerberg put out an opportunity on Facebook for people to write on a page and
bash him for anything they didnt like about Facebook.
k. Mr. Branson wanted to know what type of soda the students at TCHS preferred. He asked
all three of his classes and tallied their responses.
3. Coach Smith wants to know whether students would pay for the privilege of parking
their cars in the lot closest to the school. He surveyed students getting on the buses
while he monitored bus loading each afternoon. What type of sampling technique is
this? What do you think of his plan?
4. A large university wants to find out whether it is adequately serving the needs of its
students who live off campus. The campus is surrounded by a large number of
apartment complexes. The researchers randomly selected three of the complexes
that seemed to contain a diverse group of residents who adequately reflect the
student body as a whole, and they surveyed these residents about campus services.
What type of sampling technique is this? Why do you think the university chose this
method? Explain your thinking.
5. A study tested the effect of replacing rabbits soybean diet with Gliricidia sepium
Leaf Meal (GLM). Twenty-five young rabbits were randomly assigned to receive
either 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, or 20% GLM. Suppose, rather than random assignment,
the scientists chose the following method: The research assistant who was in charge
of gathering rabbits went in the barn and assigned the first five rabbits he could
catch to the 0% group. He assigned the next five that he caught to the 5% group,
and so on. What type of sampling technique is this? What do you think of his plan?
6. During busy political seasons, many opinion polls are conducted. In a presidential
race, how do you think the participants in polls are generally selected? Discuss any
issues regarding simple random, stratified, systematic, cluster, and convenience
sampling in these polls. What about other types of polls, besides political?
7. Come up with your own scenario!! Decide what type of sampling you would chose to
fit your scenario and why you would choose it.
