La Voix Passive

The document discusses the passive voice in French. It explains that a passive sentence is constructed with the subject, the verb in the passive voice, and optionally the agent introduced by "par" or "de". It notes that the passive voice is used in descriptive texts and the press. It focuses on the object of the verb rather than the subject and draws attention to an event without necessarily mentioning who is responsible.

La voix passive

Une phrase passive se construit ainsi :

Sujet + verbe a la voix passive + prposition par ou de + c. dagent
La tranche ennemie est attaque par les poilus.
La phrase passive semploie notamment dans les textes descriptifs et dans la
presse.
INTRODUCTION:
The passive of an active tense is formed by putting the verb to be into the same
tense as the active verb and adding the past participle of the active verb. The
subject of the active verb becomes the agent of the passive verb. The agent is
very often not mentioned. When it is mentioned it is preceded by by and placed
at the end of the clause.
Active: My grandfather planted this tree.
Passive: This tree was planted by my grandfather.
FORMATION:
= conjugated form of tre + past participle of main verb ( + par + agent)
Note that the past participle always agrees in number and gender with the
subject.
Les Aggies sont battus. The Aggies are beaten.
Les Aggies ont t battus. The Aggies were beaten.
Les Aggies seront battus. The Aggies will be beaten.
The agent, when mentioned, is usually proceded by par. However, with the verbs
aimer, connatre, and respecter, the agent is introduced by de instead.
USES:
The passive voice places the focus on the object of the verb rather than the
subject:
Tex a crit le livre Guerre et Amour Tex wrote the book War and Love
Le livre Guerre et Amour a t crit par Tex The book War ad Love
was written by Tex.
The passive voice draws attention to an event without necessarily mentioning
who is responsible for it:
Oh, Corey et Fiona ont t enlevs! Oh, Corey and Fiona were
abducted!
The passive voice is often used for inventions, laws, and, logically enough, for
events that one falls victim to:
Les parents de Tex ont t crass. Tex parents were run over.

La loi SOS-tatou a t vote. The SOS-armadillo law has been passed
