3.5 Procedure For Gathering Data

The procedure for gathering data emphasizes systematically developing research evidence by searching for both confirming and disconfirming data. Interview is the most common data gathering method, helping to clarify thinking while providing raw, reliable data directly from subjects, though it is time-consuming. Surveys gather written responses and tally results for analysis. Observation improves precision, usually done with another method to fill in gaps and answer questions.

5 PROCEDURE FOR GATHERING DATA

The emphasis in data collection is to develop research evidence systematically, searching
for a broad array of evidence which looks for both confirming and disconfirming data
(Hartley, 2004). Data collection and recording have implications for analysis which, in
turn, links to the process of theorizing and writing (Bryman & Burgess, 1994a)
Interview is the most common method of data gathering. It often helps them to clarify
their thinking on a particular topic. One benefit that you can get from this process is that
you can actually gather raw and reliable data direct from your subjects while the
disadvantage of the interview is the amount of data collected and the time consuming task
of analysing data.
Survey involves gathering responses from subjects through a written medium. Tally the
results to determine validity, and analyse results.
Observation improves precision of the research results. Observations are usually done

in conjunction with another data gathering method that is used to fill in the gaps and
answer questions.
