Lesson: Polarisation of Light

This lesson plan aims to teach students about the polarisation of light. The lesson objectives are for students to understand that polarisation is a property of transverse waves, understand how polarised light is produced by Polaroid filters and reflection, and use the formula for intensity of polarised light. The lesson involves three activities: demonstrating that polarisation is a property of transverse waves, showing how polarised light is produced by Polaroid filters and reflection, and using the intensity formula. Prior knowledge expected includes transverse waves, vectors, and the relationship between intensity and amplitude of plane waves. Worksheets are distributed for in-class and homework questions. An extension discussion on applications and phenomena of polarised light is also planned.
