Assessment Technology
Student centered learning with technology is a type of learning that allows students to
take the technology into their own hands. This way, the student is able to learn his or hers style
and able to focus on the skills that they possess. This also helps over time with problem solving
and constructive learning skills. Giving the students a bit of a free range so they are able to learn
the technology and the lesson in their own way may be able to benefit them in the long run.
Appropriately integrated technology can be used to foster student engagement, build a learner-

centered environment, and make course content come alive (Revere, L., & Kovach, J. V., 2011).
There are some really good resources out there that teachers can use to help assess their students
to make sure they are learning successfully in the students centered environment.

Technology to Facilitate Ongoing Efforts to Assess Student Learning

Technology is growing rapidly throughout the classroom and providing multiple options
for teachers to use in their lessons. Teachers are likely to use technology in their lessons and
assessments because there are more options out there that can be found by just searching on the
internet. One of the important things that teachers do is monitor their students progress
throughout the class and technology can play a helpful role with that. Teachers may not be able
to keep a mental thought of how each student is doing. There are hundreds of websites and apps
out there that teachers can use in lessons to assess and monitor their students and there are even
some that can give an assessment after everything is all done. Below I have assessed a few
apps/websites that are good for teachers to use in the classroom when doing assessments and
interactive lessons. While I only choose 3, the options are limitless.

Ask3
The first software that I have chosen is an app called Ask3. This is one of the
coolest and most resourceful apps I have seen yet. Now this app is only good if the students have
and apple device. What Ask3 does is it allows the teacher to post videos on anything from
lessons to just simple assignment notes and the students can watch them in the classroom or at
home. While watching the video, the students can post notes/comments, draw on the video or
even record their own video for the teacher to see and can go over with the student at a later

time. This is a great resource for the classroom because it provides a sense of interaction and can
be used in the classroom or even with online classrooms.
Infuse Learning
Another great example of an interactive website is Infuse learning. This website allows
for teachers to create a virtual classroom right on any device where students can interact and
answer questions right in the palm of their hands. They can also draw pictures and such and the
teacher can interact with them right on their home page. The website is good for lessons where
students have to identify something or good for Q and As. It is a really good student centered
idea because it allows the students a sort of amenity where they wont be influenced by other
students answers.
Polldaddy.com
The last one that I have chosen is Polldaddy.com. What the website provides is a survey
and quiz creator for teachers to use. It allows you to write your own questions and answers and
you even get to choose the layout of your quiz. Then you can decide if you want the results to be
seen by the students or if you want them to be kept secret. Either way, you can monitor the
progress of the students with your results page. This is great for keeping up with how your
students are progressing because you can create just simple quizzes to jog their memory.

Formative and Summative Assessments

There is a different in the two different types of assessments. Formative assessment is
assessment of student knowledge and learning for the purpose of providing guidance to students and
teachers (Lee, H., Feldman, A., & Beatty, I., 2012. Pg 523). A summative assessment is an

assessment that is taken after the student has learned the lessons. A good example for a
summative would be mid-term tests and assignments because they typically make you go over

everything you learned over the term. A good resource for formative assessments would be an
quiz creating website because it allows you to give out quizzes that teachers can use for lesson
reviews. All of the tools I listed above would be great resources for formative assessments
because it allows for monitoring during the learning; however, you can talk all of those tools and
use them at the end of the lesson or term and use them for reference of the students progress,
hence the summative part.

Pros and Cons of using Technology to Facilitate Assessment

Technology can plan an important role in assessments. There may be ideas and options that
technology can provide opposed to a teacher trying to figure it out on their own. There is also the
challenge of monitoring quite a few students over a long period of time so sometimes having that
technology is such a bad thing. Of course with that there is going to be positive and negatives. Some of
the great things about it is that it helps to improve the outcomes of the students because everything is
more accurate. With that the teacher can be clearer when creating lesson plans for the next lesson. It also
gives a more student-centered feel to the classroom because the student is able to use the technology in
their own way. For example, learning is best facilitated in environments that provide for hands-on,
experiential opportunities, accentuate student participation and interaction with peers, and encourage
student-teacher communication (Wickersham, L. E., & Chambers, S. M., 2006). However with the
student centered feeling comes a sense of isolation with the students. Then technology may not be
accessible to the classroom which is a common thing with schools losing their budgets. Lastly I would
consider the effectiveness of it all. Is it really worth the time and finances of the school? All in all I think
technology for assessments is a positive idea that can help teachers in the long run.

Conclusion
The different softwares that were showed really highlight what type or resources
out there and how assistive they can really be to teachers, and those were just a few examples.
There are so many more softwares out there that can really adhere more to what you are looking
for. We are seeing over the course of these weeks and different essays that technology can have a
big impact on our teaching. It can be a huge assist in assessing the students work over time and
even play a huge role in student centered activates. It is important that we as teachers are aware
of all thats out there, do the proper research and stay up to date with all of these resources so we
can use them to our advantage and be successful.
