Unit 2

This document provides an overview of several basic electronic components: transistors can be used as amplifiers or switches; diodes only allow current to flow in one direction and are used for voltage regulation or light emission; resistors drop voltages, limit current, and convert energy to heat; capacitors store energy electrostatically between plates and are used widely in circuits without dissipating energy; inductors store energy magnetically in coiled conductors and generate magnetic fields with current flow.

Unit 2

Lesson 1: Assignment
By: Cody Winsor
William Breon

Transistors
Transistors can be used as amplifiers or a solid state
switch

Diodes
Diodes are used as solid state devices with two terminals.
The diode only allows the flow of current in one direction,
they can also be used as voltage regulators or light
emitter.

Resistors
Resistors drop voltages and limit current in a circuit and
convert electrical energy into heat.

Capacitors

Capacitors are widely used as parts of electrical circuits

in many common electrical devices. Unlike a resistor, an
ideal capacitor does not dissipate energy. Instead, a
capacitor stores energy in the form of an electrostatic
field between its plates.

Inductors
An inductor is a passive electronic component which is
capable of storing electrical energy in the form of
magnetic energy. Basically, it uses a conductor that is
wound into a coil, and when electricity flows into the coil
from the left to the right, this will generate a magnetic
field in the clockwise direction.
