Ms. Carpenter's 2 Grade Class: Homework

Ms. Carpenter's 2nd grade class homework policy outlines that students should read for 20 minutes and do 10 minutes of math facts each night. Homework is due each Monday on a weekly log. Absences do not excuse students from homework, which is still due upon returning. Students have opportunities for making up missed homework. Reading homework is worth 5 points of the reading grade and math homework is worth 5 points of the math grade. The document also outlines grading policies, rules for birthday treats, personal belongings, supplies, volunteering, arrival/dismissal, discipline policies, and ways to contact the teacher.

HOMEWORK
Homework will consist of reading 20 minutes a night and 10 minutes of math facts.
(Please refer to the South Kearns Topcat School-wide Homework Policy paper
attached to this packet).
Unless you are informed otherwise homework will go as follows:
Every Monday (or first day of the school week), your child will bring home a new
math and reading log for the week. This homework log is to be completed and will
be due at the beginning of the following school week (Monday or the first day
students are in school that week). Late work will be accepted the day after the due
date. If homework is turned in after the day late work is due the homework will be
counted as a 0.
An absence doesnt get your child out of homework. If your child is absent on the
due date, it is due the day they are back. If your child is absent on the day the log
is sent home, your child still needs to do their homework and you can record it
when you receive the log the next day. If your child is absent for a whole week,
your child is still responsible to do the homework and turn in their log when they
return. I would prefer you to fill out the log so in order to get their homework in
on time, please have someone pick up the homework log before or after school to
fill out and be ready on the day of your childs return. If you are unable to do this
please write me a note/contact me letting me know how many days your child was
able to complete for both the reading and math portions on the day of your childs
return.
If your child skipped a day of homework, your child can make it up by doing the
missed homework on the weekend. Or, although this is not preferred, your child
can make up missed time on another day. (ex. if a student skipped 2 days and
wanted to do 3 days worth of homework on one night they would need to read for
60 minutes instead of 20 minutes and do math facts for 30 minutes instead of 10
minutes. Or maybe they only skipped math facts one night they can do 20 minutes
on another night or 10 minutes on a weekend day).
Reading homework will be out of 5 points on your childs reading grade. Math
homework will be out of 5 points on your childs math grade.

Whatever the option of make-up may be, students are responsible for 100 minutes
of reading homework and 50 minutes of math homework each week. Sign one box
per 20 minutes read and sign one box per 10 minutes your child did math facts.
GRADING AND DAILY ASSIGNMENTS
If you look at your childs math paper and see an X through it, we didnt do it in
class. Although you are welcome to work with your child to finish those problems.
In general, if an assignment doesnt get done that needs to, I will write a note on
the assignment saying it needs to be completed and brought back to school.
MISSED WORK DUE TO AN ABSENCE
When your child returns from an absence, they will receive work that they will
need to complete at home. Missed work will be sent home with a due date on top of
the assignment. Have your child return their work on that day. If it is not
returned they will risk receiving a 0 for that assignment.
Students have two school nights per day missed to turn in missed work. (ex: If
your child missed Tuesday and returns on Wednesday, your child has Wednesday
night and Thursday night to complete their work. Their homework would then be
due on Friday. (ex: If your child missed Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and
returns on Friday, your child will have Friday night, Monday night, Tuesday night,
Wednesday night, Thursday night, Friday night, and then the homework will be due
on the following Monday.)
GRADING
A scale from 1 to 5 is used in Granite District when reporting grades on the MidTerm Reports and Report Cards. This shows student progress as a numerical grade.
A score of 5 means your child is Achieving. A score of 4 and 3 means your child is
Developing. A score of 2 and 1 means your child Needs Support.
BIRTHDAY TREATS AND HOLIDAY PARTIES
FOOD MUST be ready-made and store-bought, still in the original store container.
Candy to be shared with the class must be in individual wrappers. (ex. a large bag
of M&Ms.)

PERSONAL BELONGINGS
Label all coats, sweaters, boots, lunch boxes, pencils, and other personal items with
your childs name.
Lunch money should be sent in a sealed envelope and paid at the office.
Toys and gum are not allowed at school. Toys from home will be taken and given
back at the end of the day.
DRESS
Refer to the school-wide dress code handout for appropriate dress you were to
receive in the purple topcat folder. If you need another copy you can contact me.
During the winter we still go outside for recess. Help your child be dressed for
the weather.
SUPPLIES
Students are welcome to bring erasers and pencils for their use.
Please do NOT send mechanical pencils, colored pencils, pencil boxes, small pencil
sharpeners, markers, glue, scissors, or other supplies unless specifically asked.
DAMAGED MATERIALS
If your child damages a school item you will be responsible for the cost of the
item.
VOLUNTEER
If you would like, you can come and volunteer in our classroom. Please sign the
volunteer form or talk to me to organize a time for you to be in our classroom.
ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL
When the bell rings in the morning, your child will line up by the southeast doors.
At the end of the day, your child will be walked out through these same doors,
unless they are enrolled in the after school program.

DISCIPLINE POLICY AND EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

I will be using the school-wide discipline program. To help incorporate this
program, I will be using Educators Handbook. This is a computer program that
tracks student behavior.
Every student is expected to follow the posted school/classroom rules.
These rules are:
Show respect to self, others, and community
Follow directions
Keep hands, feet, and objects to self (KYFOOTY)
CONSEQUENCES
If a student chooses not to follow these rules and expectations, the following
consequences will be applied:
1st Time = Verbal Warning; No Consequence.
2ndTime = Entry in Educators Handbook: Consequences could include a change in
where they are seated, 5-10 minute time out in classroom, or miss 15 minutes of
recess.
3rd Time = Entry in Educators Handbook: 30 min. Cross Grade-Level Time Out. A
behavior letter will be sent home.
When a behavior letter comes home, please be sure to discuss it with your child
and then SIGN and RETURN it the very next day. If you prefer an emailed
behavior letter instead, please reply to the email stating you saw the letter.
(Please fill out the form in the room that states whether you would like a paper or
electronic copy of a behavior letter if your child receives one, or there is a spot on
the last page of this packet to fill out)
