Using the Are You Ready? Intervention in an AfterSchool or Summer School Program
The Diagnostic Assessment will help you identify skill weaknesses. Each test item ties directly
to the same numbered skill. The Diagnostic Assessment can be used as a tool to scaffold the
instruction in the after-school or summer school program. The assessment is set up by strand.
You may want to test one strand at a time.
Enrichment
For those students who show proficiency on the Are You Ready? Quizzes, provide them with
the appropriate Enrichment worksheets. The worksheets are based on the concepts that will be
taught in the lessons.

Measure Angles
Class
Vocabulary: The vertex of an angle is the point where the two rays meet to
form the angle.
To measure an angle:
Step 1: Place the center hole on the straight edge of the protractor over the vertex
of the angle.
Step 2: Line up the zero on the straight edge of the protractor with one of the sides
of the angle.
Step 3: Locate the point where the second side of the angle intersects the curved
edge of the protractor.
Step 4: The number that is written on the protractor at the point of intersection is
the measure of the angle.

Teaching Skill 30
Objective Use the Triangle Sum Theorem
to find the measures of missing
angles.
Have students read the Triangle Sum
Theorem. Point out that the theorem is easily
stated in words or using symbols.
Ask: What is the sum of the measures of
the angles of a right triangle? (180) An
acute triangle? (180) An obtuse angle?
(180) Does the kind of triangle determine
the sum? (No)
Draw a right triangle on the board. Be sure
to include the symbol which indicates that
the triangle is a right triangle. Ask: Since
one of the angles is 90 and the sum of all
the angles is 180, what is the sum of the
other two angles? (180 90 90)
Work the example. Then have students
look at, but not solve, problem 4. Point out
that students will need to use algebra skills
when there is more than one unknown angle.
Write the following example on the board:
x 3x 140. Remind students how to
combine like terms and then solve the equation.
