Data Collection and Processing of Ohmic Conductor Lab

This document describes an experiment to investigate the relationship between voltage and current in Ohmic and non-Ohmic conductors. Data on voltage and current was collected from an Ohmic circuit and a non-Ohmic circuit containing a diode. As expected, the Ohmic circuit showed a linear relationship between voltage and current, while the non-Ohmic circuit exhibited a curved relationship. The resistance of the Ohmic circuit was calculated from the slope of the linear graph and remained constant as voltage increased, in accordance with Ohm's law.

Data Collection and Processing of Ohmic

Conductor Lab
Aim: Investigate the relation of drop in voltage of a Ohmic and Non-Ohmic
Conductor
Background Information: As stated by the Ohms law that there current flowing in
the circuit is directly proportional to the electric potential applied across the circuit
when temperature is kept constant. The devices such as wires and other resistors
which follow Ohms law are Ohmic devices and devices such as diode, filament, et
cetera which do not follow Ohms law are Non Ohmic Devices. In the case of Ohmic
devices there is a straight line graph, when sketched between the voltage and
current and the slope of tells us the Resistance, while in Non-Ohmic devices there is
a curvy shaped graph.

Hypothesis:
In Ohmic Circuits, it is said that there is a linear relationship of Potential Difference
across the circuit and Current applied on it. In the graph of Voltage versus Current,
the slope of the circuit will tell us the Resistance of the circuit and as it is a straight
line graph there will be the same resistance & slope throughout the graph.

Figure 3: Expected Graph of Ohmic Circuit

While in Non-Ohmic Circuits, there is no definite relationship between the Potential

Difference across the circuit and Current applied on it. Although there is a curvy
shape of graph can be expected when electric potential difference is plotted against
the current flowing in the circuit.
