Chapter One Study Notes

Holistic child development encompasses physical, emotional, intellectual, social, moral, cultural and spiritual growth. Development follows patterns from simple to complex, inner to outer, head to toe, and general to specific. Play is important for developing confidence, creativity, problem-solving skills, emotion control and social skills. Information and communication technologies (ICT) can communicate information through cameras, audio/video, internet, phones and email, and promote interactivity with computers, keyboards, websites and remote controlled toys. However, there is debate around the appropriate use of technology with very young children.

Chapter One:

Aspects of Holistic Child Development

Holistic development sees the child as a whole person:

physically, emotionally, intellectually , socially, morally, culturally and spritiually.

We study patterns of growth which are guidelines for normal development.

Developmental norms (the pattern of growth that children should follow) are
also called milestones

Physical Development = Is the way in which the body

increases in skill and becomes more complex in its
performance
Gross Motor Skill = the use of the large muscles. Example=walking and
running
Fine motor Skills= the use of small muscles. Example= drawing
Sensory Development- vision, hearing, touch, taste, smell, and
PROPRIOCEPTION= the sense that tells people where the moving parts of the
body (arms and legs) are in relation to the rest of the body.

Cognitive and language Development

Cognitive or intellectual = development of the mind
Perception = helps us understand what we see, touch , feel hear, etc.

Language development
receptive Speech= what a person understands
Expressive Speech = the words the person produces
Articulation = the person's actual pronunciation of words

Emotional and social Development

Emotional = the development of feelings about oneself, towards other

people and the development of self- esteem - self-concept.
Social development = how the child relates to other people.
