4 Bar Linkage Analysis

A 4 bar linkage consists of 4 bars pinned together, allowing observation of how changing the length of links affects the mechanism's shape and motion. Increasing one link's length causes one link to translate linearly while another moves in curvilinear translation. Increasing two or three links' lengths results in two links undergoing combined curvilinear and translational motion. To convert it to a structure, another link is added to stop the movability caused by applied forces.

4 Bar Linkage Analysis

THEORY OF MACHINES
MUHAMMAD TALHA NAEEM RAO

Construction of a 4 bar linkage:

The 4 bars of equal lengths are pinned to one another.

Observations from the experiment:

a. Increasing the length of one link

The shape of the mechanism changes as one linkage under goes linear translation while another
linkage under goes complex motion (translation and curvilinear motion combined).

b. Increasing the length of two links

The shape of the mechanism changes as two linkages undergo complex motion (translation and
curvilinear motion combined).

c. Increasing the length of three bars

The shape of the mechanism changes as two linkages undergo complex motion (translation and
curvilinear motion combined).

Converting the mechanism into a structure:

The movability of the linkages in the system must be stopped which will be caused by applied force.
That can be achieved by adding another link into the system.
