The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher activities and student
activities
We are starting our new unit on Native Americans today! Is anyone here a Native
American or know a Native American?
Students raise hands to show if they are/know one
Before I tell you anything about Native Americans, we need to do an activity outside.
Explain expectations of student for going outside
- You will be split into small groups, with your small group, you will fill out a worksheet
which I will explain once we are out there
- When you hear three whistles, come back by me
Pass out Native American packets
Instruct students to turn to page 1
When I tell you to, I need each group to spread around the playground(field) and using
the natural resources you see around you, fill out this worksheet. You will need to decide
where to find shelter, clothes, something to drink, something to eat, and how to keep
yourselves safe. Remember you can only use natural resources (not the school building or the
playground).
After I tell you what group you are in, you may grab a pencil, a clipboard, and your
packet. Then line up with your group.
- Guide the students outside of the school building to the playground (or whatever is available
to you)

Once outside, split the students up into groups of four or five

Allow the students 10 minutes to complete their worksheets.
Head back in the classroom
Gather students back together and have each group share what they found and how
they could use it
One thing that all Native American are known for is their ability to use natural
resources for everyday use! Even when it came to animals, they would use every last bit of iteven the parts they wouldnt eat!
Pass out KWL worksheets
I would like each of you to write down things you already know about Native
Americans in this column, and things you would like to know (or questions you have) about
Native Americans in this column. Leave the final column blank- we will fill that in later!
Allow students 5 minutes to write down some ideas
Have students flip the sheet upside down on their desks
Turn on ELMO
How many of you have ever heard Native Americans be called Indians? Does anyone
know why this is?
- Because when Christopher Columbus (show image of CC) came over to the United
States, he thought he was in India! (show map images)
When Christopher Columbus and other Europeans came over here and they met
Native Americans, there are two things that happened: either we lived with the Native
Americans in peace, OR we fought them and took their land. Sadly, we usually fought and
took their land. When this happened, the Native Americans would have to move to a
different, not-so-nice area called reservations. (show image of reservation)
When you think of Native Americans, what do you imagine?
- Show some old pictures of Native Americans.
Show images of Native Americans from today as well- theyre still around!
10 min
Ask students to share some things they already know, and some things they would like
to know.
Write some ideas down on your own KWL chart on the ELMO
Did you learn anything new today?
Closure
- Christopher Columbus thought he was in India and thats why many people call them
indians, Native American reservations
Have students hand in their worksheets
If there is remaining time, allow students to color the cover of their Native American
packets
