TRC2200 Thermo-Fluids (Thermodynamics Component) Test 2013: Name: - ID Number

This document appears to be a thermofluids exam containing two main questions. Question 1a involves calculating properties of water undergoing a phase change from liquid to vapor at constant pressure. Question 1b involves calculating properties of air flowing through an adiabatic nozzle, including mass flow rate, exit temperature, and exit area. Tables of fluid properties are also provided to aid in solving the exam questions.

Question 1a

a) A pistoncylinder device initially contains 50 L of liquid water at 40C and 200 kPa. Heat is
transferred to the water at constant pressure until the entire liquid is vaporized.
(I) What is the mass of the water?
[4 marks]
(II) What is the final temperature?
[4 marks]
(III) Determine the total enthalpy change.
[4 marks]
(IV) Show the process on a T-v diagram with respect to saturation lines.
[3 marks]

Question 1b [15 Marks]

Air enters an adiabatic nozzle steadily at 300 kPa, 200C, and 30 m/s and leaves at 100 kPa and
180 m/s. The inlet area of the nozzle is 80 cm2. Determine: (I) the mass flow rate through the
nozzle, (II) the exit temperature of the air, and (III) the exit area of the nozzle.
