Pampers
Founder
Victor Mills was an American chemical engineer who, while working for the
Procter & Gamble Co., revolutionized child care with the invention of the
disposable diaper; he began work on that product in the 1950s, using his
grandchildren as test subjects (b. 1897--d. Nov. 1, 1997).
1950s
While some thought father knew best, Vic Mills believed grandfathers knew even
more. This guy (who just happened to work for Procter & Gamble) looked for an
easier way to diaper his grandson. The result - Pampers was born.
1960s
1970s
Bell bottoms, Platform shoes, and tape. We replaced the pin with tape so that
parents could take a quick peek at what was going on in the diaper-and save their
fingers from any accidents. We were also busy coming up with Pampers Toddler
Size, Extra Absorbent Daytime, Improved Newborn, Quilted Pampers and
Premature Infant Size-while others were out at the disco.
1980s
Everything about this time was about excess, even diapers. We introduced value
packs, because you can never really have too many diapers. We also came up with
other brilliant ideas: the first thin diaper made with absorbent gelling material,
elastic leg gathers, tabs that could be refastened and a softer liner. We figured
even our advancements should be a little excessive too.
1990s
Forget the money. Show me the all the new Pampers. We developed Ultra Dry
Thins diapers that pulled moisture into the core, then sprang back to absorb even
more. And we also came up with the first stretch panels to make diapers more
comfortable.
Today
"What will they think of next?" Well, we're the ones thinking of that next stuff.
We've already made diapers that breathe, yes breathe. And Premium and Baby-
Dry diapers that have a protective layer of lotion that helps keep little bottoms
soft and smooth. Grandpa Vic would be oh so proud.

There is nothing toxic in the diapers. All of the diapers contain wood pulp,
absorbent gelling material (AGM), petrolatum, stearyl alcohol, aloe, polyethylene
and polypropylene (plastics), cellulose tissue, elastic, and perfume. AGM is used
in the padding to absorb wetness. This material has a long history of safe use in a
variety of products and has been in Pampers diapers for more than two decades.
AGM is closely related to ingredients widely used in cosmetics, in food
processing, and as binders in medicine capsules. When added to the diapers,
AGM is dry and granular, but it forms a gel as it absorbs liquid.
For more than 40 years, Pampers has provided protection for babies' skin.
- Swaddlers Sensitive, features breathable sides to help let more air to the child's
skin and a wetness indicator strip down the center to help one know when to
change one’s child. These features are designed for the care and comfort of the
new baby.
- Baby-Dry features the Ultra-Absorb core for unbeatable leakage protection day
and night. Like other versions, Baby-Dry has less bulk between the legs,
breathable sides, and a cloth-like back sheet to give the little one a comfortable,
snug fit. And the soft fasteners helps to adjust and readjust the diaper as needed.
- Easy Ups Trainers are the only pull-on training pants that lets the child feel
when they are wet by having a patented wet sensation liner inside. This helps the
child learn when it's time to go potty. The trainers feature Diego for boys and
Dora the Explorer and friends for girls.
Unique Feature
New improved Pampers Baby Dry has a Dual Layer System which locks wetness
and keeps it away from baby’s skin, so they can freely explore the world.
P&G is committed to ensuring that the products, packaging and operations are
safe for consumers and the environment. For products that go out with the trash,
the approach is to reduce, reuse, recycle, compost or incinerate waste prior to
land filling, where it's environmentally and economically appropriate.
Continuous research for more environmentally improved products and
packaging.
Like all products, cloth and disposable diapers both have environmental impacts.
In 2005, a major independent study by the United Kingdom's Environment
Agency showed that the overall impacts of both products were about the same.
This UK study considered all parts of each diaper's life cycle in the UK: to
manufacture, distribute, use, and dispose of the products. Although the amount
of disposable diapers in US landfills was highly publicized a few years ago, this
extensive study from the UK found that environmental impacts are also linked to
the energy, water, and detergents needed to clean cloth diapers, and to raw
material production for disposable diapers. Thus, considering the overall life
cycle of both products, the study confirms that for the UK, there is little to no
difference in environmental impact between cloth and disposable diapers.
Although disposable diapers are not biodegradable, they account for less than 2%
of the municipal solid waste stream and take up even less volume in landfills.
Improvements in technology -- like thinner, lighter, super-absorbent diapers --
have reduced Procter & Gamble's diaper bulk by approximately 40% since 1986.
A program was established that applies the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle
around the world. The focus is on reducing the amount of material used per unit
of sale and increasing the use of post-consumer recycled material in our
packages. For example, Pampers marketed in the United States are sold in bags
that contain at least 25% post-consumer recycled plastic.

Advertisements
Pampers commercials are some of the most endearing baby commercials you've
seen. While Pampers uses numerous media channels to advertise its products, it
is very selective about where it advertises their products. Pampers has held a
reputation for keeping one of the cleanest corporate images! All in tune with their
line of products.
Another common method that has been used to promote the product is direct
marketing program where relevant content is mailed to mothers with babies.
These mailings can include Pampers samples or coupons.
Right from its inception Pampers advertising has focused on a mother's loving
instinctive protection towards her baby with an emphasis on the trustworthiness
of Pampers. Those who watch these commercials adore the cute little babies that
are used on Pampers ads and commercials. You can find full-page ads in
magazine and other print media resources. These ads and commercials not only
cater to maternal instincts but also provoke the viewer to make an informed
decision to choose Pampers based on statistics and proven science.
Pampers ads and commercials offer a variety of ways to introduce a new type of
Pampers, such as Baby Dry Stretch. In these ads they reiterate that Pampers is
the driest and therefore most comfortable diapers over and against any
competitive brand. The Silent Night commercial was a big hit. It was a quiet
commercial that spoke loudly to send the message that Pampers offers the best in
baby comfort and therefore provides undisturbed, silent sleep. In the recent
years, Pampers has been bringing the world's babies together by bringing
together their global commercials. A trusted name since 1961, Pampers has been
wooing the world, one Pampers commercial at a time.
