Error Rate

The document discusses error rates in data transmission and communication connections. It defines error rate as the number of errors encountered during data transfer, with higher error rates indicating a less reliable connection. It specifically defines bit error rate as the number of bit errors per unit of time, and bit error ratio as the number of bit errors divided by the total transferred bits during a time interval, which can estimate the bit error probability for long time intervals with many errors.

The degree of errors encountered during data transmission over a

communications or network connection. The higher the error rate,

the less reliable the connection or data transfer will be.
In addition to communications the term error rate can refer to anything
where errors can occur. For example, when taking a typing test that
measures errors an error rate is used to calculate your final score or Net
WPM.

The bit error rate (BER) is the number of bit errors per unit time. The bit error
ratio (also BER) is the number of bit errors divided by the total number of
transferred bits during a studied time interval. BER is a unitless performance
measure, often expressed as a percentage.[1]
The bit error probability pe is the expectation value of the bit error ratio. The bit
error ratio can be considered as an approximate estimate of the bit error probability.
This estimate is accurate for a long time interval and a high number of bit errors.
