One of the quotes I learn from Aristotle is that good habits formed at youth make all
difference. The legal aid conducted in the Barangay Consolacion last Saturday was a not only a
time for lawyers to devote themselves to the spirit of public service but for the young lawyers to
shine and experience the limelight of being an attorney in action.
The event started at early as 8:30 AM but we prepared the venue around 8:00 AM. The
excitement and preparedness of the junior and senior law student is evident while curiosity and
being nave is evident to the freshmen. We have different confidence that manifest depending to
the level of knowledge in terms of law and its application. The more knowledgeable the student,
the more he engage in the legal aid.
Alas, the clients started to grow in number, and the venue was at 6 th floor of the new
building which is great in terms of facility. In fact, some freshmen are instructed to spread near
the hall to disseminate the free legal aid that we offer. At the end of the event, we approximately
served 50 people with satisfaction.
One thing I realize is that the common dispute we have inclined towards civil aspect.
Land dispute is common among the clients we have served. Some asked for an advice on what to
do with their mistaken gender or spelling of their name in their birth certificate and some just
want to have prepared document for affidavit of loss, unfortunately we do not provide public
notary service but only document preparation.
In conclusion, the legal aid was the best venue for a growing law student like me to be
exposed as early as first year to develop the immature mind that cannot distinguish yet the
difference of the study of law and the application of law. On the other hand, for the junior and
senior, the legal aid was the best venue for them to apply what they learn and practice the legal
profession in reality. Lastly, the legal aid was the best venue for the lawyers to serve the public
without compensation of their service.
