X YRecorder

An X-Y recorder is an instrument that records the relationship between two variables, where one variable is plotted against the other. There are two main types: analog and digital. The analog X-Y recorder works by applying signals from transducers to a self-balancing circuit, which produces an error signal that is amplified and used to drive motors that move the writing assembly in the X and Y planes in order to minimize the error signal and produce a graphic record of the relationship between the two variables. Common applications include measuring speed-torque characteristics of motors, plotting stress-strain curves, and recording electrical characteristics of devices and materials.

X-Y Recorder

.Instrument that record one or more dependent

parameters that vary with respect to some independent

parameters are called xy recorders or function plotters
.It provides graphic record of relationship b/w two
variables
.Two types:
1) Analog xy recorder
2) Digital xy recorder
) Here one variable is plotted against another variable
) Both electrical & non electrical quantities can be
recorded

construction

Operation
Signal from appropriate transducer is

applied to attenuator
Self balancing ckt comprises attenuated
signal to the fixed reference voltage
o/p of error detector is the difference b/w
the variation in i/p signal and reference
voltage which is a dc voltage
Chopper ckts converts dc to ac signals
As the ac signal level is low it is necessary
to boost up the level so that the motor can
drive the writing assembly
Servo amplifier amplifies low ac signal to

Amplified signal is applied to servo motor(arm

drive & pen drive ) so that writing assembly

moves in proper direction reducing the error
signal
X i/p drives pen in x plane ;Y i/p drives arm
in y plane
When x i/p is present, pen drive motor
continues to drive the pen until error signal is
zero(same for arm drive also)

Advantages:
1) The instantaneous relationship b/w two

physical quantities can be recorded

2) Relationship b/w electrical & non electrical
quantities can be recorded

Applications
To measure:
1) Speed-torque charas of motor
2) Regulating curves of power supply
3) Plotting strain-stress charas, hysteresis

curves etc
4) Plotting charas of active devices such as
diodes, zener diodes,transistors etc
5) Plotting electrical charas of various
materials such as resistance v/s temp etc
6) Lift drag wind tunnel test
