Crowds
David Foster Wallace seems to focus on different crowds and the distinct social
interactions that exist within these groups. I read three of his essays, Consider the Lobster,
Shipping Out, and Big Red Son. From a Maryland Lobster Festival, luxury cruise, and an adult
video convention, Wallaces focus on the very unique cultural and interactions that he observes
is revealed in all of his essays. Personally I really enjoy how David Foster Wallace writes these
recreations through a involved and immersive experience of the group. Wallaces writing comes
from spending hours with these groups, observing the interactions between the people and
participating in activities. Through the study of these crowds Wallace investigates the strange
culture and needs that attract people together. Like the undercover cop setting up a sting
operation, Wallace enters the group as an observer and writes the realities of the people that he
meets.
What Im trying to say is that his writing style is that of an anthropologist. By immersing
himself in a cultural sphere he observes and records these unique social landscapes that exist
in society. And by first getting an understanding of how these social bubbles work, he then
proceeds to bring up a line of questioning on various moral and ethical dilemmas associated
with these spheres. Why do people love lobster so much? Why do people go on these cruises?
Why are so many Americans addicted to pornography?
