Introduction
We use computers everyday, so it is important to know
a little were they come from and what we can do with
them in the future.

Charles Babbage
1791-1871
Father of Computer
best remembered for originating the concept of a
programmable computer

First Generation (1940-1956)

First Computers used Vacuum Tubes
They took up entire rooms
They relied on machine language
UNIVAC ENIAC examples of first generation
computers
UNIVAC first comrcial computer delivered to
business client, 1951

Second Generation(1956-1963)
Transistors replaced Vacuum Tubes
Transistors invented in 1947
Moved from cryptic binary machine language to
assembly language
High level programming languages developed at
that time
Programs such as COBOL and FORTRAN

Third Generation(1964-1971)
The development f the integrated circuit
Transistors were replaced on silicon chips
Use keyboards and monitors and interfaced with an
operating system
Allowed the device to run applications
Become accessible to mass audience

Fourth Generation (1971present)

The microprocessor was introduced
Fits in the palm of the hand
The intel 4004 developed in 1971
1981, IBM first computer for home user
1984, apple Macintosh

Fifth Generation (present and Beyond)

Based on artificial intelligence
Voice recognition
Parallel processing
Quantum computation and Nano technology
Goal: to develop devices that respond to natural
language

Internet
The Internet was the result of some visionary thinking
by people in the early 1960s who saw great potential
value in allowing computers to share information on
research and development in scientific and military
fields. J.C.R. Licklider of MIT first proposed a global
network of computers in 1962, and moved over to the
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in
late 1962 to head the work to develop
Today we use it for everything
