Warm Up 9/29/15

This document provides information about photosynthesis and cellular respiration. It defines respiration as the process by which cells obtain energy from glucose. Plants store energy from photosynthesis as carbohydrates, which cells break down through respiration. Respiration has two stages - the first occurs in the cytoplasm and releases a small amount of energy, while the second takes place in mitochondria and requires oxygen to release more energy. The respiration equation and raw materials and products are provided. Fermentation is also summarized as a process that releases energy without oxygen.

Warm up 9/29/15

1. The Chemical Equation for

Photosynthesis?
2. The Word Equation for Photosynthesis?
3. What are the raw materials for this
equation?
4. What are the products for this equation?
5. What does the arrow in the chemical
equation stand for?

IV. Respiration
A. What is Respiration
1. Respiration- is the process by which
cells
obtain energy from glucose
* Cells break down food molecules
and
release the energy they contain

2. Storing and Releasing Energy

* Plants store energy they gain in the
form of carbohydrates (sugars)
* Cells break down the carbohydrates
when they need energy

3. Breathing and Respiration

* Respiration has two meanings
* Breathing air in and out of lungs
* Cellular respiration- process inside of
cells breaking down sugars into energy

4. The Two Stages of Respiration

* Stage 1- takes place in the cytoplasm
* Glucose is broken into smaller molecules
* No oxygen involved
* Small amount of energy released

* Stage 2- takes place in the mitochondria

* Small molecules broken down even smaller
* Requires oxygen
* Releases large amount of energy

5. The Respiration Equation

* C6H12O6 + 6 O2 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + energy

RAW MATERIALS

PRODUCTS

Warm up 9/30/15
1. The Chemical Equation for Respiration?
2. The Word Equation for Respiration?
3. What are the raw materials for this
equation?
4. What are the products for this equation?
5. How many Stages are in respiration?
6. How are Respiration and Photosynthesis
related?

6. Comparing Photosynthesis and Respiration

* Opposite processes
* Cycle that keeps O2 and CO2 fairly constant
in the atmosphere

Which process- photosynthesis

or respiration- produces water?

Respiration.

B. Fermentation
* Some cells obtain energy without O2
* Fermentation- process of releasing
energy
from sugar without oxygen
* Releases much less energy than
respiration

1. Alcoholic Fermentation
* Occurs when yeast and other single
celled organisms break down sugars
* Products = alcohol, CO2 and
a small amount of energy
* Important process in baking and
brewing

2. Lactic Acid Fermentation

* Takes place in your body
* Exercise
* Occurs when muscle cells use up O2
faster than it could be replaced

* Product = lactic acid

* Makes muscles feel weak and sore
