Q K V e e R R: Problem Set 5 Problem 1

This document contains 6 fluid mechanics problems related to topics like flow fields, stream functions, velocity potentials, pressure gradients, and siphon flows. Problem 1 involves analyzing the velocity field of a tornado and calculating accelerations and pressure gradients. Problem 2 looks at flow between parallel plates and calculating a pressure gradient. Problem 3 derives expressions for tangential velocity and pressure as functions of radius for a forced vortex liquid stirrer flow pattern.

Problem Set 5
Problem 1
The velocity field near the core of a tornado can be approximated as

q
2 r

er

K
e
2 r

a) Is this an irrotational flow field?

b) Obtain the stream function for this flow.
c) Obtain the velocity potential for this flow field.
d) Given that q = 2 m3/s/m and K =1 m3/s/m and the fluid density is 1000 kg/m3, find the
acceleration at (1, 0), (1, /2) and (2, 0). Evaluate p under the same conditions.
Problem 2
Air flows into a narrow gap, of height h, between closely spaced parallel plates through a porous
surface as shown. Using a control volume, with outer surface located at x, it has been shown that the
uniform velocity in the x direction is u v0

x

and v v0 1 Considering the flow field, assume

the flow is incompressible with 1.23 kg / m3 and friction is negligible. Further assume the
vertical air flow velocity is v0 15 mm / s , the half-width of the cavity is L = 22 mm and its height is
h = 1.2 mm. Calculate the pressure gradient at (x, y) = (L, h).

Problem 3
The flow pattern in a liquid stirred in a large closed cylindrical tank can be approximated by a forced
vortex of radius, a, and angular velocity, (corresponding to the location of the stirrer), surrounded
by a free vortex that extends indefinitely radially outwards, as shown in the figure E7.1.1. If the
pressure is P for large values of r, derive the expressions for tangential velocity, v , and pressure, P,
as a function of radial location, r.

Problem 4
Air flows steadily at low speed through a horizontal converging nozzle discharging to atmosphere.
The area at the nozzle inlet is 0.1 m2. At the nozzle exit, the area is 0.02 m2. Determine (after listing
and explaining the necessary assumptions) the gauge pressure required at the nozzle inlet to produce
an outlet speed of 50 m/s.

Problem 5
A U-tube acts as a water siphon. The bend in the tube is 1 m above the water surface; the tube outlet is
7 m below the water surface. The water issues from the bottom of the siphon as a free jet at
atmospheric pressure. Determine (after listing and explaining the necessary assumptions) the speed of
the free jet and the minimum absolute pressure of water in the bend.

Problem 6
Consider the flow field is given by ax 2 ay 2 where a 3s 1 . Show that the flow is irrotational.
Determine the velocity potential for this flow.
