Exponents Handout

1. Any number raised to the zero power is equal to 1, except for 0 which is undefined. Negative exponents indicate the reciprocal of the base raised to a positive exponent. 2. To multiply or divide powers with the same base, add or subtract the exponents respectively and keep the common base. 3. To raise a power to a power, multiply the exponents. To raise a product or quotient to a power, raise each factor or the numerator and denominator to that power.

Exponent Properties

1. Zero Exponent:
Any number raised to the zero power is equal to 1, except for zero which is not defined.
0

a = 1 ; a =/ 0

where as

0 is not defined

Example: 4 = 1 and 2500 = 1

2. Negative Exponent:
Negative exponents indicate reciprocation, with the exponent of the reciprocal becoming positive.

To multiply powers with the same base, add the exponents and keep the common base.

6. Product to a power:
To raise a product to a power, raise each factor to the power.
