Basic Instrumentation

Instrumentation is defined as the art and science of measuring and controlling process variables such as flow, pressure, level, and temperature within a manufacturing or production area. The aim of instrumentation is to maximize production quality while minimizing raw material usage. Historically, instrumentation evolved from pneumatic to electronic systems. Modern instrumentation includes distributed control systems and supervisory control and acquisition systems that allow remote monitoring and control of processes.

INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING

Instrumentation
Defined as the art and science of measurement and
control of process variables within a production or
manufacturing area

Instrument
Is a device that measures or regulates physical
quantity/ process variables such as flow,
pressure,level or temperature

INTRODUCTION TO INSTRUMENTS
& MEASUREMENTS

12

Measurements
The measurement of a given quantity is essentially
an act or the result of comparision between the
quantity and a predefined standard.
Since 2 quantities are compared the result is
numerical value

13

Requirements for meaningful measurement

The standard used for comparision purposes must be

accurately defined & should be commonly accepted
The apparatus used & the method adopted must be
provable

14

Methods of measurement
Direct method
Indirect method

15

Instruments
An instrument consist of a single unit which gives
an output reading or signal according to the
unknown variable applied to it.
