Example - Short Column

The document provides a design example for a short reinforced concrete column. It is assessing whether a 3.5m tall column with a 250x300mm cross section and supporting an axial load of 1500kN is a short or slender column. It determines the column is short based on its slenderness ratio of 21.25 being less than the limiting slenderness ratio of 26.2. It then designs the longitudinal reinforcement as 4H20 bars and stirrups as H6 links at 250mm spacing to resist the column moment of 2.79kNm from the applied loads. A sketch of the reinforcement detailing is also required.

UEMX2343: Reinforced Concrete Design II

Design Example
Short Column
A 3.5 m height braced reinforced concrete column is supporting an axial load of 1500 kN
(including column self-weight) and two moments act about minor axis, as shown in Figures Q2.
The cross-section of column is 250 mm 300 mm. Assume concrete cover is 40 mm, concrete
grade is C25/30, and steel strength = 500 N/mm2.

Design Example
Short Column
(a)

Assess whether it is a slender or short column.

Effective column height,

I col = 300 x 2503 /12 = 390.63 x 106 mm4
I beam = 300 x 5003 /12 = 3125 x 106 mm4
K1 = K2 =
4.5 x 103

390.63 x 106 /

2( 2 x 3125 x 106 / 4.0 x 103 )

= 0.0278
From Table 9.1
0.5 + [(0.56 0.5) x 0.0278/(0.0625 0)] = 0.527
= 0.527 x 3.5m
= 1.84m
Slenderness Ratio,

Radius of gyration,

= 86.6mm
= 1.84 x 103 / 86.6 = 21.25

Slenderness Ratio, =
Braced column = lim

= 26.2 / 1
= 26.2 ( > 21.25)
Hence, column is a short column.

(b)

Design the longitudinal steel reinforcement and stirrups for the column.

k = (0.78 + 0.78 + 0.16) x 10-3

Distribution factor for column = kcol = 0.16 = 0.093
