This document provides an overview of systems of equations and how to identify solutions to systems of equations. It defines a system of equations as a set of two or more equations containing two or more variables. The solution to a system is a set of values that satisfy all equations. It demonstrates how to check if an ordered pair is a solution by substituting the values into each equation. Finally, it shows how to solve a system of two equations graphically on a calculator.

Teacher……….okay then, by ME Vocabulary • System of equations: a set of two or more equations that contain two or more variables • Solution of a system of equations: a set of values that are solutions of all of the equations. If the system has two variables, the solutions can be written as ordered pairs. Identify Solutions of a System of Equations • Determine if each ordered pair is a solution of the system of equations below. • 2x + 3y =8 and x – 4y =15 • EX (- 2 , 4) • To solve, plug in (x,y) into each equation. If both equations prove true, it is a solution. If either of them is false, it is not a solution. • 2x + 3y = 8 x – 4y = 15 • 2(-2) + 3(4) = 8 (-2) – 4(4) = 15 • -4 + 12 = 8 (-2) – 16 = 15 • 8 = 8 True - 18 = 15 Not True • (-2, 4) is Not a Solution Identify Solutions of a System of Equations • ( 7, -2) • 2x + 3y = 8 • 2(7) + 3(-2) = 8 • 14 + (-6) = 8 • 8 = 8 True • x – 4y = 15 • (7) – 4(-2) = 15 • 7 – (-8) = 15 • 15 = 15 True • (7, -2) IS A SOLUTION Solving Systems of Equations • Solve the system of equations • y = x + 3 and y = 2x + 5 • Enter equations on calculator • Graph • 2nd trace, 5 (intersect) • (first curve) ENTER (second curve) ENTER (guess?) ENTER • (intersection) x = -2, y = 1 • (-2, 1) is the solution
