Welcome back! Our first few days in grade two have been filled with lots of activities as we get to know each
other, establish routines and prepare for the year ahead. I would like to share the following information with you:
Allergies: We do not have any students with allergies in our classroom but I encourage each of them to wash their
hands if they get peanut butter on them as there are students in the school with allergies to nuts.
Agendas: Please be sure to check your childs agenda daily for notes and sign it so I know that you have seen it. I
will sign it with a stamp (a fancy H for September). You may have noticed that your child is circling the date each
day and colouring a book on the month page. On page R-7 near the back of the agenda there are 100 sheep that
your child can practice counting (forward, backward, skip by 2, 5, 10) and starting at different numbers. Please let
me know when your child has practiced counting on this page.
Chef du jour: Each child has a turn to be my helper. Duties include changing the calendar, leading the line, passing
out papers, taking papers to the office and others as needed. We also have a door holder. This person may be
asked to help the Chef du jour.
Home Reading: Your child will be bringing home an English book to read with you soon. More information will
accompany the book and log.
Communication: I update my website regularly - mmebosko-kelly.weebly.com. You can access it through the school
website (http://www.lssd.ca/bonaventure/) or directly in your browser. Please refer to it for the calendar, photos,
and gym, phys. ed. & library schedule. I will also send emails. Feel free to contact through the agenda or by email
([email protected]) and I will get back to you as soon as possible. New this year: Class Dojo messaging. The
Class Story is a new feature that I am learning to use where I can post pictures and messages. Please feel free to
contact me through this application too.
Gym Clothes: Students will bring their gym clothes home once / month (usually a Friday at the beginning of the
month) for laundering and for you to check to make sure they still fit. Please remember to send them back the
next school day.

Our Teaching Philosophy

As educators we feel, it is important to provide a positive learning environment where all students feel safe and
welcome. We believe that all students can succeed. In helping them to reach their goals, we will use a variety of
strategies to accommodate their different learning styles. The use of Technology will also be integrated in all
subject areas through the use of our interactive Smartboard, five ipads and five laptop computers. Our classroom
will encourage students to make choices which will permit them to have a voice.

Franais
All subjects apart from English Language Arts (ELA) are taught in French. The students will be expected and
encouraged to communicate in French with their teachers and with their peers during all French activities. The
students will work on:

Developing correct sentence structures orally and in writing

Learning and using new vocabulary
Speaking with an accurate pronunciation
Reading

In September we will be reviewing classroom vocabulary and words related to fall. Students will learn how to write
sentences by copying from a model. Through guided reading sessions (Lecture Guide) students will learn reading
strategies appropriate for their level. We will be using a digital version of Le pouvoir dcrire (Handwriting
without Tears) to practice letter formation.
English Language Arts (ELA)
The ELA curriculum enables each student to understand and appreciate the English language. Language proficiency
generates confidence and competence in communicating in a variety of situations, as well as facilitating personal
satisfaction of learning. Students become confident and competent users in all six components of the ELA
curriculum, which are:
Reading (Guided Reading), Writing, Speaking, Listening, Viewing and Representing.
We will be using Words Their Way, a spelling program that addresses students specific abilities.
At the end of this document are 2 poems that we have read your child can practice them with you!
Mathematics
The structure of mathematics, which is divided into four strands, presents a multifaceted view of mathematics.
The strands are taught throughout the year with the level of comprehension of each concept increasing as the
concepts are taught. Problem-solving is also taught throughout the year and is integrated into each of the strands.
The strands are:
Number, Patterns and Relations, Statistics and Probability and Shape & Space.
In September we will review and continue learning about the following:
-

Counting forwards and backwards (0-100);

Skip counting by 2, 5 and 10 (starting at number other than 1)
Even and odd numbers
Spelling numbers with letters
Subitizing, adding and subtracting with Power of 10 Cards
Addition strategy: rote adding and adding doubles
Patterns review repeating patterns and look for patterns around us
Graphs about us

Science
This years science program consists of the following units:
Position and Motion
Properties of Solids, Liquids, and Gases
Air and Water in the Environment
Growth and Changes in Animals
In September, we will learn about Position and Motion. The children will develop a sense of space as well as an
understanding of the relationship between stationary and moving objects, including themselves. Through
observations and the use of specific vocabulary, students develop their ability to describe the position and motion
of objects and recognize the effects of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object. In exploring motion, students
investigate inclined planes, and wheels and axles as types of simple machines.
Social Studies
The Grade 2 Social Studies program consists of the following units:
Skills for Active Democratic Citizenship
Our Local Community
Communities in Canada
The Canadian Community
Septembers unit of study is Skills for Active Democratic Citizenship. We will talk about how to work in cooperative
ways toward achieving common goals, and to collaborate with others for the well-being of their communities.
Health
In Grade 2, we will focus on the following:

Personal and Social Management (self-understanding and positive relationships)

Healthy Lifestyle Practices (nutrition, dental, physical activity, human growth & development)
Safety (At school, home, in the community & near water and bicycle safety)

In September we are talking about how we are special and unique. Your child will be bringing a yarn braid home with
mini clothes pins on it. By the end of that week, s/he needs to bring it back with photos and items about
him/herself to present to the class. Two students will be chosen each week.
Art
Students will be learning various principles and elements of design throughout the year. Projects will often be
related to themes. In September, we will be doing two pastel activities a landscape and a sunflower.

Parent Support

A students first and most important line of support comes from you. In terms of their school life, there are a
number of basic things you can do to help your child:

Listen: Its normal for them to want to share with you what has happened to them during their day. Your
listening tells them that their school life is important.

Inform: Keep the schools information on your child up to date. Advise us about the highs and lows of your
childs life when they happen. The agenda or an email is an excellent way to ensure this communication need
is met. The more information we have on your child, the better we can respond to your childs needs.

Read: Reading with your child can be a very satisfying and enjoyable experience for all of you. Just a few
minutes each day, sharing a story or part of a book, can increase your childs interest in reading.

Volunteer: Parents are welcome in our classroom (be sure to have completed the documents required by the
office). This month, we need help preparing portfolios writing the subjects on the page dividers. Please
let me know when you are available.

Goodbye vacation!
Hello to school!
Hello new classmates,
Goodbye old pool.
Vacation time's over,
School time is here,
Once more we welcome
Another school year.

Circle of Friends
We've joined together as classmates
as the new year begins...
A year full of learning
while we become friends.
We'll share and be kind
as we work and we play.
And our friendship will grow
