Franais
All subjects apart from English Language Arts (ELA) are taught in French. The students will be expected and
encouraged to communicate in French with their teachers and with their peers during all French activities. The
students will work on:
In September we will be reviewing classroom vocabulary and words related to fall. Students will learn how to write
sentences by copying from a model. Through guided reading sessions (Lecture Guide) students will learn reading
strategies appropriate for their level. We will be using a digital version of Le pouvoir dcrire (Handwriting
without Tears) to practice letter formation.
English Language Arts (ELA)
The ELA curriculum enables each student to understand and appreciate the English language. Language proficiency
generates confidence and competence in communicating in a variety of situations, as well as facilitating personal
satisfaction of learning. Students become confident and competent users in all six components of the ELA
curriculum, which are:
Reading (Guided Reading), Writing, Speaking, Listening, Viewing and Representing.
We will be using Words Their Way, a spelling program that addresses students specific abilities.
At the end of this document are 2 poems that we have read your child can practice them with you!
Mathematics
The structure of mathematics, which is divided into four strands, presents a multifaceted view of mathematics.
The strands are taught throughout the year with the level of comprehension of each concept increasing as the
concepts are taught. Problem-solving is also taught throughout the year and is integrated into each of the strands.
The strands are:
Number, Patterns and Relations, Statistics and Probability and Shape & Space.
In September we will review and continue learning about the following:
-
Science
This years science program consists of the following units:
Position and Motion
Properties of Solids, Liquids, and Gases
Air and Water in the Environment
Growth and Changes in Animals
In September, we will learn about Position and Motion. The children will develop a sense of space as well as an
understanding of the relationship between stationary and moving objects, including themselves. Through
observations and the use of specific vocabulary, students develop their ability to describe the position and motion
of objects and recognize the effects of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object. In exploring motion, students
investigate inclined planes, and wheels and axles as types of simple machines.
Social Studies
The Grade 2 Social Studies program consists of the following units:
Skills for Active Democratic Citizenship
Our Local Community
Communities in Canada
The Canadian Community
Septembers unit of study is Skills for Active Democratic Citizenship. We will talk about how to work in cooperative
ways toward achieving common goals, and to collaborate with others for the well-being of their communities.
Health
In Grade 2, we will focus on the following:
In September we are talking about how we are special and unique. Your child will be bringing a yarn braid home with
mini clothes pins on it. By the end of that week, s/he needs to bring it back with photos and items about
him/herself to present to the class. Two students will be chosen each week.
Art
Students will be learning various principles and elements of design throughout the year. Projects will often be
related to themes. In September, we will be doing two pastel activities a landscape and a sunflower.
Parent Support
A students first and most important line of support comes from you. In terms of their school life, there are a
number of basic things you can do to help your child:
Listen: Its normal for them to want to share with you what has happened to them during their day. Your
listening tells them that their school life is important.
Inform: Keep the schools information on your child up to date. Advise us about the highs and lows of your
childs life when they happen. The agenda or an email is an excellent way to ensure this communication need
is met. The more information we have on your child, the better we can respond to your childs needs.
Read: Reading with your child can be a very satisfying and enjoyable experience for all of you. Just a few
minutes each day, sharing a story or part of a book, can increase your childs interest in reading.
Volunteer: Parents are welcome in our classroom (be sure to have completed the documents required by the
office). This month, we need help preparing portfolios writing the subjects on the page dividers. Please
let me know when you are available.
