This document discusses user-defined velocity functions in Petrel including:
- Creating velocity functions from checkshot data to use for depth conversion and building velocity properties
- Petrel can handle velocity-depth (Z(TWT)), interval velocity (Vint(TWT)), and average velocity (Vavg(TWT)) functions
- The workflow involves: loading velocity data points, creating a 3D grid, assigning the velocity function to the grid, and building a velocity model using the grid property

Principle of user defined velocity functions
User defined velocity functions can be created in Function windows
Often user defined velocity functions are guided by check shot data Velocity functions based on an analytical function with known parameters need to be created in Excel and loaded as a (X,Y) data points Petrel can handle the following types of velocity functions: - Z(TWT) - Vinterval(TWT) - Vaverage (TWT) Functions of the type Z(TWT) can be used as a look-up table for surface and interpretation conversion (objects Settings -> Operations tab -> Common operations)
Workflow for setting up user defined velocity
functions Create a new folder in the Input pane, load the velocity data points using the format Function X,Y Alternatively a velocity polygon can be drawn or modified in a Function window using checkshot data as guide Create a 3D grid Assign the velocity function to the 3D Grid (Petrophysical modeling - Method: Assign value) Build a velocity model using the Property as Velocity function. Assign the velocity property created in the 3D grid to the velocity model
