Lecture 4 Moment of Inertia

Moment of inertia (Iz) about the z-axis is calculated by integrating the square of the distance (y) from the axis of rotation over the area (dA) of the object. For a rectangular object, the moment of inertia about an axis perpendicular to its face and passing through its centroid is Iz=bh3/12, where b is the width and h is the height.
