Grade 7 ELA Midterm

Review Sheet
To prepare for your ELA midterm exam, you should do the following:
I. Study your Spelling words from Units 1-14. You will have a dictation that includes 50
of these words. Take extra time to study words that you spelled incorrectly on previous
dictations.
II. Review the following grammar topics from Communicating Skills:
1. complete and incomplete sentences: p. 1
2. singular and plural nouns: p. 8-9
3. capitalization and punctuation: p. 10
4. types of sentences: p. 13
5. verbs: p.17
6. helping verbs: p. 21
7. verb tenses: p. 26
8. using commas in addresses, dates and series: p. 18
9. using commas in direct address and with interrupters: p. 22
10. subject and predicate: p. 20, 23, 40
11. making subjects and verbs agree: p. 30, 33
12. irregular verbs: p. 31, 38, 46
13. punctuating dialogue: p. 34-35, 41
14. point of view: p. 39
15. root words: p. 42
16. prefixes: p. 44-45
17. using apostrophes to show possession: p. 52-53
III. On the exam there will also be a listening test. A short story will be read to you and
then you will be asked questions.
IV. On the exam there will be a reading test. You will individually read a short article and
then answer questions based on the article. Some of the questions are multiple choice.
Others are short answer. For the short answer questions, be careful to answer thoroughly,
accurately, neatly and in complete sentences.
V. On the exam there will also be a major writing assignment. We will brainstorm with
the class some ideas related to the topic during a class before the exam. In another class
you will preplan your story using some ideas from our brainstorming as well as some of
your own ideas and knowledge. In another class you will write a rough draft of your
story.
On the exam date you will write the final draft of your story. You will also take time
during your exam to carefully revise and edit your story with suggestions from a revising
and editing checklist.
