7-7 Scale Drawings

This document discusses scale drawings and how to use scales and proportions to determine unknown lengths or scales. It provides examples of how to set up proportions to find lengths on a scale drawing given the actual length, or to find the actual length given the scale drawing length and scale. It also gives examples of using scales to determine actual heights when only the scale drawing height is known.

7-7 Scale Drawings

BY: ME
Vocabulary
• Scale drawing: a two-dimensional drawing
that accurately represents an object. (also
models)
• Scale: gives the ratio of the dimensions in the
drawing to the dimensions of the object.
• Reduction: when a scale model or drawing is
smaller than the actual object.
• Enlargement: when a scale model or drawing
is larger than the actual object.
How to read scales
• The scale a:b is read “a to b”.
• For example, the scale 1 cm: 3 ft is
read “one centimeter to three feet”.
SCALE INTERPRETATION
1:20 1 unit on the drawing is
20 units

1 cm: 1 m 1 cm on the drawing is 1

m
¼ in. = 1 ft ¼ in. on the drawing is 1
ft
Use proportions to find
unknown scales or lengths
• The length of an object on a scale drawing
is 5 cm, and its actual length is 15 m. The
scale is 1 cm: _?_ m. What is the scale?
• Set up a proportion using
• find the cross products

• x=3
Use proportions to find
unknown scales or lengths
• The length of an object on a scale
drawing is 3.5 in. The scale is 1 in: 12 ft.
What is the actual length of the object?
• Set up proportion using
• find your cross products

• x = 42 feet
Life Science
• Under a 1000:1 microscope view, a
paramecium appears to have a length
of 39 mm. What is its actual length?

• x = 0.0039 mm
Scales
• A drawing that uses the scale ¼ in. =
1ft is said to be in ¼ in. scale.
• Similarly, a drawing that uses the
scale ½ in. = 1 ft, is in ½ in scale.
Using scales and scale
drawings to find heights
• If a wall in a ¼ in scale drawing is 3
in. tall, how tall is the actual wall?

• Cross multiply and solve

• x = 12, the wall is 12 ft tall.

Using scales and scale
drawings to find heights
• How tall is the wall if a ½ in scale is
used?

• Cross multiply and solve

• x = 6, the wall is 6 ft tall.
