Compare and Order Numbers
You can compare real numbers by expressing them in the same form. You should express each number either as a
decimal or as a fraction.
In some cases you may need to approximate the value of a number as a decimal.
A number line is a useful reference to compare and order numbers.

Example 1
Fill in the with <, >, or = to make a true statement.
12 3.6
12 3.46 3.6 = 3.6

Example 2
Order the set of numbers from least to greatest. Verify your answer by graphing the
numbers on a number line.
7, 50, 6.8, 5.4
Express each number as a decimal. Then order the decimals.
7 = 7.00
50 7.07
6.8 = 6.80
5.4 5.44
From least to greatest, the order is 50, 7, 6.8, 5.4 .
