Solid Fuels Problem Set

3. A medium volatile bituminous coal has an analysis of 27.13%VCM, 62.5% FC, 7.11%ash, 0.95% S and
1.28%N. Its calorific value is 32.3 MJ/kg. this coal is burned in excess air supplied at 30C, 756 torr with

c. m3 stack gas (270C, 768 mm Hg)/kg coal
4. Dry coke composed of 4% inert solids (ash), 90% carbon, and 6% hydrogen is burned in a furnace with dry
air. The solid refuse left after combustion contains 10% carbon and 90% inert ash (and no hydrogen). The
orsat analysis of the flue gas gives 14.9% CO2, 0.8% CO, 4.3% O2, and 81.0% N2. Calculate the following:
a. % excess air based on complete combustion of the coke.
b. Calorific value of the fuel
5. A boiler is fired with coal analyzing 13.8% VCM, 3% Moisture, 1.2%S, negligible N and a calrofic value of
32.95 MJ/kg. The dry refuse removed analyzes 5% VCM, 27%FC and 68% ash. 60% excess air is supplied
