Day Three Lesson Plan

The lesson plan aims to teach students to identify the mathematical operations needed to solve multi-step word problems. It begins with reviewing previous lessons. Students will then learn to look for key words in problems that indicate addition, subtraction, or multiplication is required. Examples will be worked through identifying the relevant operations. Students will then independently work through guided practice problems before completing an individual assessment worksheet.

Day Three Lesson Plan

Learning Target

When given a story problem that requires multiple steps to solve, students will identify
the operation(s) needed to correctly solve the problem and mark it with a highlighter.

Advanced Preparation & Materials Needed:

All of the same materials from Lessons 1 & 2. 3 charts, titled Addition, Subtraction,
and Multiplication.

Sequenced instruction:

Begin by going over any misconceptions from previous days lesson.

Introduce the lesson Identifying which operation(s) are needed to solve a multi-step
story problem.

There are clues in story problems that will help you decide what operation, or more than
one operation you will need to solve the problem.

Reveal the first chart, Addition. Go through each word, one by one (the list of words is
on the next page).

Next reveal the chart Subtraction. Again go through each word.

Finally, reveal the Multiplication chart. Once again, go through each word.
Ask the students if they have anymore to add.
Bring out the first Teach problem. Go through and look for any words from the
problem that pop up on the lists.

We see twice which indicates multiplication. We also see how many which indicates
addition. (Highlight them)

Next bring out the second problem and do the same.

Ask for any questions the students may have. When they are finished, pull up the 1st
Guided Practice problem.

Once the students have correctly identified the words to highlight, repeat with the 2nd
Guided Practice problem.

Hand out their individual worksheets and have them independently identify the key
words in their own problems.

Walk around and provide additional support as needed.
