Developments in Flame Retardant Finish

This document discusses recent developments in flame retardant finishes. It covers non-halogen based flame retardants containing phosphorus or silicon, as well as formaldehyde-free options. Intumescent flame retardants and the use of plasma technology to create nanocoatings are also mentioned. Specifically, the document notes the replacement of antimony-bromine formulations with phosphorus compounds for textile back-coatings. It also discusses using plasma treatment of polymers like PET in the presence of gases to create flame retardant coatings, and incorporating expandable graphite as a flame retardant in polymers.

INTRODUCTION
Many flame retardant chemistries researched and developed during the 1950-1980 period for
improving the fibre performance of both natural and chemical fibres have not been significantly
added to last 25 years or so. this is a consequence of increasing commercial demands in term of
cost effectiveness and general toxilogical character of these materials and treatments.
Recent developmemts includes increasing efficiency of known chemisry to enhance char formation by
intumescents
