PDF Investigating Heat - Practical Report
PDF Investigating Heat - Practical Report
Aim
To compare how effectively different substances conduct heat.
Hypothesis
It was except that all the substances will decrease over time and
expected that the metal cup would conduct heat the best and
keep the hot water hot for the longest. This was expected because
metal is the best heat conductor.
Apparatus
Ceramic Cup
Metal Cup
Paper Cup
Thermometer x3
Kettle
Measuring Cylinder
Water
Method
1. The Kettle was filled with cold water and was turned on to boil
2. Once the water was boiled, it was poured into the measuring
cylinder
3. After 100mL of water was measured, it was poured into one of the
cups
4. The thermometer was placed in straight away and the timer
begun
MG Science-Practical Reports
5. After every minute, the temperature was recorded and put into a
table
6. When 10 minutes had been elapsed, the timer was stopped and
the thermometer was removed
7. These steps were repeated for the last 2 cups

Discussion / Analysis
1. The results indicate that the Paper Cup conducted the heat the
best and kept it the warmest during the 10 minutes, the Paper
Cup was not expected to keep the water the warmest, as metal
and ceramic cups also keep boiling water very hot.
2. This test relates very well to our outside world and our theory
work in class, as we have been studying heat conductors, and
we use these cups to have coffee or tea in every morning! Now
we can take this experiment and implement it in our daily life.
3. This experiment was pretty straight forward, didnt need much
explaining and no questions were asked.
4. One of the biggest sources of error we possibly could have
come by is by using different thermometers, this could have
provided us with false information because of the fact the
could have possibly been at different temperatures before they
were put in to the mugs.
5. The experiment went well overall but had one hiccup; this was
of course the thermometer change. This will have effected the
results of our experiment, but this was only due to time.
6. The only improvement that could have been made was more
time for the experiment to be conducted in.
7. Suggestions could include, different types of cups from the
ones we used. Also there could be further research into heat
conductors to see which cup in truth should keep the water the
hottest.
Conclusion
It was found that the Paper Cup conducted heat the best and kept
the water the hottest in the 10 minutes. The experiment was a
success and we discovered how different cups conduct heat.
