Passage Master

Name: ANDREA CELAYO ALTAMIRANO

Book:_THE DEVIL WE KNOW
Chapters: PROLOGUE
Locate 3 passages of the story that your group should reread, discuss, and think about.
Passages should be important things for everyone to notice, remember, or think
about.
Choose a variety of passages, not all the same type--here are suggestions:

surprising/startling
confusing (something you wonder if other people understood)
descriptive writing: figurative language, strong verbs, etc. (identify literary devices) important
(maybe a clue? foreshadowing?)
controversial
event (elicits different opinions from group members)

During Your Group Meeting, Do the Following:

1.
Make sure everyone opens to the right page and help them find where the passage begins.
2. Either
read it aloud yourself, have everyone read it silently, or ask someone to read it
3. Tell your
reasons for selecting each passage; ask for comments. Do they agree with your choices?
Page ____5___ Paragraph(s) __4___ The first 3 words of the paragraph are:__IN THE CIA_ This is
interesting (or puzzling) because:

I THINK THIS BOOK WILL BE AN INTERESTING ONE BECAUSE IN THE

PARAGRAPH, THE NARRATOR TELLS ABOUT HOW HE LEARNED ABOUT
IRAN WHEN HE WAS AT THE CIA. INVOLVING THE CIA, MAKES THINGS
MORE INTERESTING FOR ME.

An interpretation that can be made from ANOTHER PASSAGE, found on Page ___3______, Paragraph
____2___ is

THAT AMERICANS HAVE A DIFFERENT IMAGE OF IRANIANS, THEY HAVE

THEIR OWN IDEA AND THEIR OWN STEREOTYPE OF THEM.

because

THE AMERICANS THINK ABOUT THE IRANIANS AS THE TYPICAL TURBANTED,

VERY RELIGIOUS, BROWN-SKINNED MAN. STEREOTYPES ARE NOT GOOD, BUT
THEY DO EXIST.

In today's reading, a CONNECTION to my personal experience and/or my knowledge appears on Page

_______4__, Paragraph ____2__ and is

I SUPPORT THIS POINT, THIS IS TALKING ABOUT HOW THE USA HAS MISSED
THE IRANIAN EVOLUTION. BECAUSE IT IS TRUE, IRAN HAS GROWTH A LOT
AND NOBODY HAS NOTICED THAT. USA IS NOT AWARE OF THE ACTUAL
IRAN.

My comment or question about this story is:

I HOPE THIS WILL BE A COOL STORY BECAUSE IT HAS ALL THE MATERIAL
TO BE A GREAT BOOK; THE PROLOGUE WAS GREAT, IT INCITE ME TO
RESEARCH AND LEARN A LOT OF THINGS ABOUT THE IRANIAN CULTURE.
