Skeletal Notes For Unit 4 - Lesson 4 - Notes On Triangle Inequalities PDF

The document discusses three theorems related to triangles: 1) The measure of an exterior angle is greater than either remote interior angle. 2) The largest side is opposite the largest angle and smallest side opposite smallest angle. 3) The sum of any two sides must be greater than the third side (triangle inequality theorem). It provides examples applying these theorems to determine possible side lengths of triangles.

Corollary to the Exterior Angle Theorem

The measure of an exterior angle of a triangle is greater than the measure of each of its
remote interior angles.

Side and Angle Theorem

If all angles in a triangle have different measures, then the largest side of the triangle will
be directly across from the largest angle and the smallest side of the triangle will be
directly across from the smallest angle in the triangle.

Triangle Inequality Theorem

The sum of the lengths of any 2 sides of a triangle is greater than the length of the third
side.

Example 3: Can a triangle have side lengths of 3, 6, and 10?

Example 4: Can a triangle have side lengths 3, 7, and 8?

Practice 3: Can a triangle have side lengths of 2, 5, and 6? EXPLAIN.

Practice 4: Can a triangle have side lengths of 9, 12, and 22? EXPLAIN.

Example 5: Lenny was fencing a triangular region to keep his colored rabbits in. He has 8 feet
of fence for one side and 10 feet of fence for a second side. What are the possible lengths for the
third side?
HINT: Let x represent the length of the third side and use 3 different inequalities.
