Dear Parents,
The students are starting an exciting new reading project for 2015. With this project, the
students will be able to choose their own reading curriculum, while building important
reading skills. I have done this in the past and it has proven to be highly effective in
increasing students reading abilities.
Each nine weeks, the students will be required to read a total of four (4) books-three (3)
informational books plus one (1) chapter book, by an award-winning author. The students
will be given a log in which to record the books they have read as they read them. THIS
LOG IS TO STAY IN THEIR READING FOLDERS.
Here is the process and requirements:
1. The student will choose a book to read-either an informational book, or a chapter book
by an award-winning author and on their reading level. These can be library books,
personal books, books borrowed from me, etc. I have approximately 75 books in my
classroom that they can borrow.
**2. The student will completely read the book. We will have a little bit of time to read
in class, but a majority of the reading should be done at home nightly. The books
should stay in their backpacks, so that they will have access to them at school and at
home, especially in the event of snow days, when the student will miss class time.
***3. After the student has completed a book, they will record the books title under the
correct genre. They will record the date that they finished the book. Then, they will rate
their overall opinion of the book from 1-10 (with 1 being that they didnt like it and
would not recommend it and 10 being that they loved the book and would highly
recommend it to classmates). The students will also record why they decided to give the
book the rating that they gave it, using complete sentences.
5. Once they have completed the Title, Date, and Rating/Why parts of the log, they will
have it initialed by me and by you. The students will bring the logs to me to initial after
completing EACH book, but I will also be checking each log and meeting with students
to insure that they are continuously working on the reading requirements. Remember, this
is a REQUIRED assignment to be completed by the end of the nine weeks.
EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY!!!
The students will receive 3 points extra credit for each book they read that goes with the
nine weeks Social Studies curriculum. Therefore, if all three informational books, and
the chapter book goes with the curriculum, it is possible to receive 12 points extra credit,
or 112%. Remember, the three informational, plus one chapter book is REQUIRED, but
matching them with the curriculum is EXTRA CREDIT.
Please always feel free to email or send a note if you have any questions. Please keep this
letter for your records.
Sincerely,
Mr. Klaput
